(4) Amazing Voice

This was honestly the weirdest thing you've ever done.

You were huddled on the cold bathroom floor, only in your undergarments and clutching a towel to your chest with your head against the wall. From the other side, you heard the door open and the vent start whirring as your neighbor walked in his bathroom. As quietly as you could, you arranged your shower things and pressed your ear to the wall.

The water turned on on the other side of the wall, and you hesitated a moment before acting as though you just walked in the bathroom. You could've sworn you heard a slight chuckle on the other side of the wall, but the sound of your rushing water drowned it out.

Your neighbor cleared their throat as you stepped in and pulled the curtain shut, humming a little bit to themselves. The first time this had happened, you were super embarrassed about taking a shower at the same time as the man who was only on the other side of the wall. Now, though, it was something you looked forward to. Unfortunately, your neighbor seemed to have a sporadic showering schedule, so you couldn't exactly do it every day unless you wanted to make the rest of the apartment floor very, very angry.

You cleared your throat as well, trying to recognize the tune your neighbor was humming. You didn't get it until he actually started singing.

You swallowed and took over. Your neighbor noticed and backed down.

Your voice tapered down, and your partner took over the chorus.

Despite the steamy water, chills shook your spine as you listened to him sing. Your duet partner had the voice of an angel, and if you didn't live to sing, you'd be disappointed when your turn to sing came. For now, though, he was still going.

With a breath, you slowly took over the lyrics.

You let your neighbor take the part you sang last time, then sang the chorus. You could've sworn you heard him make slight impressed noises as you sang. So caught up in the song, you almost didn't notice that he was stealing the next verse.

"And I been waiting for this time to come around"

"But baby running after you is like chasing the clouds," You added.

I drive all night
To keep her warm
And time," he paused, and you grinned.

"Is frozen," You sang together. The two of you Sang the rest of the song together, him taking the melody while you hit your own harmony perfectly.

Your partner dropped out gradually, letting you finish solo.

"The story of my life." You finished with a sweet smile on your face. There was a brief clapping, then his water shut off and soon you were alone.

The next day, you adjusted your hair and grabbed your car keys, heading out to grab some groceries. As you put the key in your door, your neighbor opened his. At first you didn't think much about him until you realized which neighbor he was. Your singing partner.

He had already noticed and had taken to staring at you, so when you twisted your head towards him you immediately met his warm brown eyes. He had a tuft of pink on his otherwise black hair and a huge smile one his face.

Before you could greet him, he said in a deep, smooth voice almost as heavenly as the one he used to perform, "You have an amazing voice."
