The next day at work I'm greeted by an extremely stressed out Victoria who looks as if she may just explode from anxiety. "Hey what's up with you? You ok?" I ask sounding a little worried. "No.. No Eve.. Not ok.. I am going to be jobless soon and who's going to pay my rent and feed my kids? I need to start looking for a new job before I become homeless" she says, her voice filled with panic.
'Wait.. slow down, what do you mean?"
"It's all over Eve. The new boss is going to fire me. He won't like me. In fact he'll bring his own staff along with him and fire everyone here".
"Alright Victoria you need to calm down. We're all going to be fine. He's won't fire anyone. There's laws in this country. He cannot simply fire whoever he wants whenever he wants. I'm sure this old man won't pay enough attention to anyone here as long as everyone gets the job done".
"You're right, I'm just overreacting. I'm just tired and nervous" she responds in a flat tone.
"Maybe have a coffee before you get back to work.. I'll meet you in a few hours for lunch" I reply and make my way to my office. People everywhere in the building seems to be acting slightly chaotic to get each thing to perfection before the big boss arrives.
After many hours of file work is completed, suddenly, I am startled by a sharp thud of a knock on the door. "Come in" I mutter. I watch as the door knob slowly turn and being pushed open. In front of me stands a tall dark haired man in a well fitted black suit. All at once I'm reminded of the man in the elevator from last night. "Damn, this is him" I think to myself. I feel my palms getting sweaty and my heart racing. I remain seated, analysing the man before me.
"Hi, you must be Evelyn?" the deep, brooding voice questions.
"Um yea.. yup.. yes Evelyn.. that's me" I mumble sounding like a socially awkward fool.
He takes a step forward and extends his arm. I abruptly get off my chair. "Hi, I'm Deion Ward, the new CEO of this company", he takes my hand and shakes it firmly. "It's nice to meet you" he adds with a radiant smile.
"Thank you, it's nice to meet you too Mr Ward".
I quickly pull my hand away. He doesn't seem to remember me from last night which puts me at ease. Never did I expect the new boss to be this young and handsome.
"I believe you are in charge of the administration department", he states. "I'm just going around and getting to know everyone before I officially start my job here".
"Right, I guess you have three more floors to visit then" I remark.
"Aha Good point, I better get to work. See you around. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need anything" he says kindly and exits the room.
I plop back on my chair and let out a sigh of relief, glad to be left alone.
"Holy god, who would've thought he'd end up being my boss? Why does he have such an unsettling effect on me? May be it's his compelling looks? or the way his eyes glisten when he smiles." I wish he would stop being so charming. It would make my job much easier.
I wonder if Victoria has met him.
As if on cue my phone starts to vibrate. I quickly pick up and is startled by Victoria's booming voice.
"Oh my god Eve have you met the new boss yet? He seems so kind. I think I'll get to keep this job after all" she announces through the phone.
I am slightly caught off guard by the fact that Victoria only finds this man kind. She is never one to hold back on complementing things that catch her eye.
"Yea I definitely think you'll get to keep your job" I chuckle. "He does seem kind but I can't help but think that his kindness is just an act to get everybody to like him as it's only his first day".
"You do have a good point, I guess only time will tell us what he's really like. Any-ways I got to go make some calls and since we skipped lunch, can we grab dinner after work?"
"Sure, sounds good"
"Bye bye" we both say in unison and hang up.
The rest of the day flies by as usual. Wrapping up the days work, myself and Victoria exit the building feeling famished. I look up at the sky to see that the sun has disappeared over the horizon to be replaced with thousands of stars. The outdoors always look different at night. It has a calming yet a dangerous sense to it.
"You know Eve, this morning made me realise that I'm so grateful to have this job. There are many people who don't have the opportunity to pursue a career in what they love. I hope you and I can do what we love for a very long time" Victoria says in a dramatic tone.
"What's with the sudden dramatic words?" I scoff.
"I'm not sure, I think I need food in my system" she replies with quiet laugh.
"Alright let's go feed ourselves some food".
