Goodbye (Part 1)

Note: In this story, Riley is 15 and Lucas is 16. They've been dating for almost a year now.

"I'm moving back to Texas."

Riley stared at him in shock. She tried to speak but no words came out. A few minutes ago, Lucas came through her bay window saying that he has something to tell her. This was not the thing she expected. Instead of saying something, Riley walks up to him and hug him. He wraps his arm around her.

"When are you leaving?" She whispered. She was trying so hard to hold back her tears. She didn't want him to see her cry. She knew it would make him sadder. And she didn't want that.
"In 2 days."
"Oh." That's all that she could say. Before she knew it, she began sobbing. She cried in his chest and he hugs her tighter.

"It's okay Princess. We'll make it work. I promise." He kissed her temple.
"No. This is what always happen. The girl or guy moves then they don't talk to each other anymore and ends up falling for other people."
He lift her head with his hands to make her look at him.
"But we're not like normal couples. And even if I travel all around the world and meet million of girls, you'll be the only one in my heart Riley. I love you way too much to even look at other girls."

"I know you do. It's just- long distance relationships never work out in the end."
"I guarantee you Riley that if 1 in 1000 relationships work out and the rest didn't, it will be us."
"Promise?"
Lucas leans in and kisses her. "Promise."
"Can you stay with me?"
"Always."

They sat on the bed and he puts her arm around her while her head is on his chest. They stayed like that while enjoying each other's warmth. They knew it was going to be one of thousand things that they will miss about each other. So they'll do anything to make it last.

Riley helped Lucas packed up the final things in his room. They only have until tomorrow to spend time with each other before Lucas goes on a train back to Texas. Lucas starts packing his clothes while Riley watched him.

"Do you have to leave?" She asks him. Lucas looks at her and gave her a small smile.
"I do. I tried convincing my parents to let me stay. I did Riley. But you know my parents, when they're certain about something, nothing is going to stop them."
She nodded. She has met his parents before. A couple of months after they started dating, Lucas took her to meet his parents. They're amazing, don't get her wrong. But they're very determined. And when they're determined about something nothing is going to change their mind. Lucas remembered the conversation when he was told that they were moving.

"Dad we can't move."
"Lucas, the decision is final. We're moving in a week. Go pack your bags."
"Dad I can't just leave Riley like that. She means the world to me. I can't be away from her."
Lucas' mum finally spoke. "Lucas I know you care about her and we do too. But you're 16. You're too young to say things like that."
"You don't get it. I love her."
"Yeah. We know. And we do too. But there's no way out of this sweetie."
Lucas storms up to his room and slam his door shut. He throws himself on his bed and punch his pillow.

Lucas looks up at her and see the sadness in her eyes. He grab his football jacket from his suitcase and walk over to her. "What is this?"
"My football jacket. I want you to have something of mine before I leave."
"But I already have something of yours." Riley showed him the necklace he gave her when they were 14. She never took it off until this day.
"Yeah. I know. But I want you to have this to remember me by." He said while putting the jacket around her.
"So this is mine now?"
He hugs her from behind. "Yeah. Just like I am."

"But I don't have anything to give to you."
"It's fine. You gave me your heart. And that's all I need."
He kissed her temple and they stayed like that for a couple of minutes until they continued to pack.

For a while we pretended.
That we never had to end it.
But we knew we had to say goodbye.
You were crying at the airport.
When they finally closed the plane doors.
I could barely hold it all inside.

The day that they both dreaded has come. Riley arrived at the train station with Josh, Maya, Zay and Farkle. Lucas was already there, waiting for his dad to buy the tickets. Riley didn't say anything. She has nothing to say. She pinch herself. Thinking that this was all a dream and she would wake up and he would be there to tell her that everything's alright. But it never happened. This was real. And there's no way out of this. She was wearing his jacket. She loves the comfort of it. It really feels as if he was there with her in person. Riley refuse to believe that he is really leaving. But she knew it was pointless. They're not going to see each other anymore in a while.

Lucas was devastated. He doesn't want to leave. He has to leave his friends behind. His home. And mostly, his girlfriend. The girl he loves behind. He thought that they were going to be together forever. He knew what he wanted in the future. And it's her. But how are they're going to have a future when they're going to be miles apart.

His dad came and gave him the tickets. The train depart in a couple of minutes and he needed to say goodbye. His parents said goodbye to his friends but Lucas' mum hugs Riley.
"I'm sorry honey. Lucas really loves you Riley. You're all he ever talks about."
Riley lets go and look at Mrs. Friar with a sad smile on her face.
"I know. And I love him too."
Mrs. Friar looks at her and kiss her forehead and goes on the train, followed by her husband.

Maya was the first to say goodbye to Lucas.
"I'm going to miss making fun of you everyday Huckleberry."
Lucas laughs. "Me too Clutterbucket."
Maya smiled and hug him. Riley was not jealous because she knew it was just friendly. Plus she was dating Josh.
Josh was next and he hugs Lucas. After Lucas and I started dating, they've grew a strong friendship. Riley smiled when she sees her boyfriend and uncle getting along so well.
Farkle and Zay both tackled him for a group hug.
"I'll miss my best friend," Farkle said.
"He's actually my best friend," Zay stated.
"You both are my best friends. I'll miss you guys."

And lastly he turned to Riley. Riley just stood there. Not knowing what to do.
"I'm not giving up on us Sunshine. We're going to see each other again. I promised you didn't I?"
Riley nodded. She held back her tears and looks down. Lucas walks closer to her.
"I see you're wearing my jacket."
"I wanted to know that you're always here. Even after you leave."
"And I will."
Riley walks over and hugs him. She lets the tears flow. She couldn't hold it in. Lucas lets go and wipe her tears away.
"Don't cry Princess. You don't suit it. Everything is going to be okay."
"I don't know Lucas-"
"Hey. You're the one who's supposed to be full of hope here. But I'll tell you what, I believe that we will end up together. I believe that we will make this work. "
She nodded.
"This is not a goodbye Riley. I believe that we will be together. I have hope in us."
Riley smile and he leans in and kiss her. They were interrupted by the announcement saying that the train is going to board in a couple of minutes. They pulled away and look at each other.

"I love you Riley Matthews."
"I love you too Lucas Friar."
He gave her another peck on the lips and head to the train. He took a final glance at his friends and gave them a smile before heading in.
