Magdalena Domorik had only been four when her parents had abandoned her, her younger sister Donata had been three. It was hard in Sokovia to be a young child on the streets. The riots scared you senseless when you had nowhere to run. Or how the older street kids picked fights. Lena had never been scared after the first year, and acted like any other older kid, and was soon accepted. When she actually registered as an "older kid" she had been ten. Donata had been nine.
And then the epidemic hit. All homeless were accepted into a quarantine for the healthy, another quarantine had been constructed for the sick and dead. Burned into Magdalena's brain was the image of her sister being torn from her arms when they spotted the first dark purple and black marks littering Donata's body.
She remembered then, two weeks later, the news that Donata had died alone, died in the night. She remembered the last time silent tears snaked along her cheeks, and she remembered hating the people with medicine for not doing more, for not saving her people, for not saving her sister.
That same year, Sokovia had been bombed. She remembered running through the streets avoiding all rubble and debris. She then remembered skidding to a stop. A shell was in that rubble. And on that shells side was one word: STARK. She remembers thinking 'one wrong step and I'm a goner.' But she didn't die and was left to live on without her other half.
Now fast forward six years and she was rioting with other Sokovians against foreigners taking control of her country. She was throwing her fist in the air and yelling in her mother tongue. When a chubby, tallish man stepped up on the platform.
"People of Sokovia! My name is Dr. List! I am here to offer you an opportunity to save your country from demise!" Someone threw a tomato at him and they missed. "Now please! Allow me to propose my idea to you all!" He shouted. He explained that he would give them powers, powers so they could defend their country. But he also explained that they could die. What did Magdelena have to lose? She was dead on the inside anyway. About forty people agreed to go.
They were put in jeeps and driven to the old, abandoned castle that sat on a hill. "Oh yea, abandoned." Lena thought sarcastically as she stared at the old castle made of sandstone.
"This is where the experiments shall be held." They led them into the building and down some corridors. They stopped at three metal doors. They took the first three people and threw them into the rooms. They went down the lines. She was middle in line. She was thrown into the last room.
"Hello, I am Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker, you are?"
"Magdelena Delila Domorik."
"Lovely, now please lay on the table."
She did and people strapped her in.
She glanced at Strucker.
"Safety precaution."
He said barely glancing at her. She snorted. She didn't remember much but she did remember a golden staff with a glowing blue...thing.
