I have always thought it was interesting how little incidents turn into epidemics in an instant. Like the whole 'zombie apocalypse' thing. It started with everyone thinking that stupid people on drugs were wondering around biting people, and now it's different. Pack your bags because the whole freaking world is ending. I personally, didn't think anything of it because zombies aren't real. They are as real as unicorns and vampires. Who ever believes in all the zombie nonsense is stupid. I thought my roomate was insane when she moved out to go to her parent's house. I didn't think it was a apocalypse; I was sorely mistaken.
I didn't have enough time to go to my parents home in El Paso: God, I barely had enough time to grab my dog Strudel and a bag of clothes. Once I decided to leave I backed up my car up I headed towards Houston.
The radio broadcasts said there was a refugee camp and I thought that was my best chance of surviving this thing. The problem was that everyone had the same idea. The highway was backed up miles. There was no possible way I would make it to Houston in a day. No matter how bad the traffic was, I would just camp out in my 2009 Saturn Aura with my dog, Strudel.
~
It wasn't long until there was a rapid tapping on my window. Strudel let out a high pitched squeak that sounded like a old door hinge. I open my eyes to see a women outside my car door. She was a bleach blonde, tall lady and was wearing a pink dress, which was soaked, with siver high heels. It was easy to tell that she was from a wealthy family. I open the car door cautiously: "Can I help you? " I mumble. The woman looked down at me expectantly, tossing her bleach blonde hair behind her shoulder.
She purses her lips, "I've been trying to get your attention for along time now, but you were to busy sleeping and I'm like dying right now," she says. Wow, that's a first impression. "You have like no idea what I've been through tonight." she continues, "First my driver kicks me out of the car and drives off, then I walk around asking for a ride only to be touched by some peasant. Now I have nobody to take me to my husband. It's our anniversary." The woman pouts and looks at me with watery eyes. "Will you be a doll and take me to him?" She pleads. I begin to shake my head no but the woman cuts in: "I can give you my necklace!" She cries, putting a hand on a dainty little diamond necklace that was probably worth more then my apartment.
I had no idea what to say. This lady just came up to me and started ranting about her husband who was probably dead. I have no idea how to deal with people like her, or people in general. People are scary, end of story. I'd much rather hang out with my dog than any other human dead or alive. "Um... I gues—" I start.
"Oh thank you thank you!" she interrupts. What is with this woman and interrupting?
Then there was a boom, so loud it shook the ground beneath us. A bright light came from the direction of Houston.
That's when the chaos started. I hear one high pitch scream. Then a stampede comes towards us. People are running towards me and the woman. They run right over her. A man with a white mustache and a motorcycle hat comes to the rescue. He helps the woman up. He has a blonde girl around my age with him.
"Get in your car and follow me! I know a place we can go!"
I don't know what made me do it, but I listened with out hesitating.
The white mustache man honks his car for us to follow. He turns off the road into the surrounding woods. As I follow him I hear a gunshot in the background. I look at the women next to me who was just frightened by the gun shot.
"It will be alright," I realize I don't know her name, "wait, what's your name anyway?"
"Lisa. Lisa Alderage."
"Hi Lisa."
"Hello." I guess I would have thought she was going to ask my name, and I would respond with a cheesy smile. Haha nope.
After a moment of silence she says, "We are still going to get my husband right?"
I don't know. Right now all I am doing is following some man I just met into the dark secluded woods. God what was I thinking?
~
It was a couple of hours before we rolled to a stop. There was a small shed to the right of the car and a small creek on the other. The hero man steps out of the car, the girl in the passenger seat also steps out of the car. I get a closer look on the girl next to him and I realize those long legs. This girl is probably a model. Although, her face could use some contouring. Not like I know how to do that though. Lisa and I get out of the car. I keep Strudel in the car. The man approaches us, "I'm Larry Barrnett and this is my daughter Kennedy," he states. Kennedy looks like the definition of sweet and innocent. She looked shy and not very out spoken.
"I... I'm... um Iliana Lo... Lopez and this is... uh Lisa," I say. He nods. "So what is going... um on? Where... where are we... we?" I ask after a pause. He looks around.
"This is just a little plot of land I own. I just come out here to think and fish. Mostly thinking is what I do. I'm not very good at fishing, but I like to try. I thought we'd be safe here until we get this shtuff all figured out. Plus there is fish in the creek and food in that small cabin," he affirms. I nod slowly and look down.
I hate fish.
Why would he risk his neck for us? We were nothing special, I mean maybe Lisa was someone and I just have know clue. Larry asks Kennedy to lead us to the cabin as he unpacks the car. The cabin is small and cute. Two windows at the front and two on each side. It was maybe 200 square feet, maybe more. There was one bathroom and one bedroom. The living room was small but not as small as the kitchen.
"I can't live like this!" Lisa exclaims. "My closet is bigger than this and I can barely stand that!" She stops and pauses to realize what she just said, "You know, it will do." Kennedy looks offended but says nothing, in fact no one says anything. Lisa slumps over to the couch and collapses. Kennedy goes and stands in the kitchen. I stay where I am. I don't move until Larry comes in with two suit cases. He directs little miss model to take the two suit cases into the room. I follow him out, I want to get Strudel. I open the car door and get in. Strudel jumps in my lap. I love my precious Strudel. Yes I do! It's sad but I think she's my only friend. Strudel yaps at me, stating it is time to go to the bathroom. I put on her mini halter and her leash and take her out side. She does both numbers. I go back to the car to take out my essential items. I take out my phone and it's charger. My water bottle, my blanket and pillow also come along.
I walk back inside to find Lisa talking to Kennedy by the couch. From what I hear, she wants Kennedy to take the couch so she can have to room to herself. I guess I'm on the floor. I don't mind being on the floor. I mean sometimes I sleep on the floor because it's more comfortable then the bed. Kennedy and Lisa go somewhere and I lay out my Mickey Mouse blanket and put down my Grey's Anatomy pillow. It has McSteamy on it. I believe he is the cuter one of the Mc's. I lay down and my baby lays down with me. It doesn't take long for me and her to fall asleep.
