A person can sit in a county jail for 2-3 years. A lot of people who have gone beyond county jail will tell you that some of the hardest time they did was in county. Mind you, all jails are different. Some have perks and features that society would think ridiculous for criminals to have while incarcerated. When you go through county, there are different facilities you could end up in. You could go to a "trustee" hold over where you're in jail but not really. You could end up in a 8 man cell, 24 man cell, or, in some places, 72 man dorms. Why is time so rough in county? In the wrong county you'll get maybe an hour and a half of Recreation and books only come twice a month. In county jail you're there with other people who are scared and don't know what's happening with their lives. Men don't know how to show fear or concern, so they portray that they're tough and the hardest criminal in the place, and when you have 72 men with that mentality the results are inevitable. You end up with grown ass men fighting over Ramen noodle soups or spots on a bench or petty words like punk. The uncertainty of what's happening is tough and keeps you on edge. Then you have the guys that KNOW they're going to prison for 15years so what do they have to lose?
Prison is different. Prison is a world all to itself. It doesn't have the same rules as the rest of society. In prison you're not in a cell all day. Youre always moving around rather you're working, going to school, or hanging out in the day room. The worst part about prison is the habits that are picked up. In prison you know what to expect. In prison you actually go to a store, not just order crap off a cart. It's really just your typical community...just the inhabitants of this community are all certified criminals.
