I wait in the audience with my mother and father, bored out of my mind. I already know who will be chosen this year.

I remember when Lana Alcina was chosen four years ago. Her orange aura was so bright, it nearly outshone the flood lights.

But now my brother's up there, his aura a nice vibrant green mixing with the four others. He'll be one of this year's Goddess Husbands, as well as the blond on his left with the faded blue aura, the redhead a few rows back with his yellow, the brunet with blue eyes and a barely-there purple, and the one with the orange hair, freckles, and light red aura.

The nature goddesses will be after Onyx. His green glow will attract everything that's ever grown a leaf. Blondy will catch the water goddesses, Redhead will catch any light goddesses, Blue-eyes will catch night goddesses, and Freckles will get war goddesses.

None of them look like much, but appearances aren't everything.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the gods have spoken!" The announcer announces. "This year, we have five Goddess Husbands!" A murmur of relief travels through the crowd. No more anomalies like Lana Alcina, they seem to sigh.

"Evan Brook!" That'll be Blondy. "Luke Beam!" Redhead. "Andrew Shade!" Blue-eyes. "Ubel Mallory!" Oh, what an unfortunate name. That'll be Freckles, then. "And Onyx Starr!"

My mother and father and all of our friends leap to their feet, screaming out their delight. My brother just smiles as his clear green eyes find mine. I told him years ago he'd be chosen; he understands why I don't seem as enthusiastic.

It's not a surprise, really.

I hear his question as if he's standing next to me. "Will you help me?"

I send him my own message. "Of course."

"I trust you, Ruby," my brother says.

I smile. "I know." My smiles fades as I speak sincerely. "I will never betray your trust, Onyx."

He nods as a woman leads him off stage. "And I'll never betray yours," my brother promises.
