"....and it's a balmy 78 degrees here in Orlando. Thanks again for flying with us today folks, and enjoy your stay in sunny Florida."
As we descended from the air onto the ground, I felt butterflies in my stomach. Not only because I was thinking about the competition, but because the boy three rows ahead of me on the plane had stood up to get his bag out of the overhead compartment. He was tall, and was wearing a beanie. Meredith nudged me and nodded in his direction. Before I could say anything, he glanced back towards where I was sitting. We made eye contact for a split second, and he gave sort of a half smile before sitting back down in his seat. Meredith nudged me again, and I finally pulled myself away from staring at the back of his head. "He was looking at you," she whispered. I turned to face her. "What? No. He wasn't," I said, my cheeks turning red. "He's cute," she laughed. I let out a deep breath and sunk down in my seat. "Really, really cute," I agreed. "What?" Sydney said, half-asleep. She had passed out for the entire plane ride, and looked a little confused. "Nothing," I told her, laughing at her nappy hair. She rubbed her eyes and looked out the window. "Oh my god, we're here!"
I grabbed my carry on bag and forced myself into the slowly moving line of passengers exiting the plane, with Sydney and Meredith behind me. As I was approaching the front of the plane, I noticed that the boy who I had noticed earlier was waiting to get out of his seat. He was with another taller, much older, tattooed guy as well. He was also attractive. "Go ahead," I said, pausing in front of the row he had sat in, holding up the line to let him off. "Thanks so much," he said, flashing one of those full teeth smiles that was so cute it makes your chest burn.. if that makes sense. He was carrying a large, black duffle bag. After making our way off the plane, we headed towards our coaches and other teammates who were waiting for us at the baggage claim. I noticed the boy who I had let go had people waiting for him as well.. except his people were dressed in black suits and were holding a dry erase board that read "Mahone". I'm assuming that was his last name, and for some reason it sounded oddly familiar.
I scanned the luggage claim area for my red suitcase, but I didn't see it anywhere. "I'll be right back," I told Sydney and Meredith as I headed toward the other side to see if my suitcase was over there. I managed to spot a red suitcase heading toward me. I grabbed the handle and lifted it up; it was a lot heavier than I remembered, surprisingly. "Alexis?" I heard my name from behind, and when I turned around I saw the same boy who I had noticed from the plane. He was holding a red suitcase about the same size as the one I had just picked up. "I think we might have gotten our luggage mixed up," he said, smiling as he wheeled the suitcase toward me. I glanced down and saw that the name tag on the one I had picked up read "Austin M." Oops. "It's Lex," I said. He looked confused. "I go by Lex. But thank you," I said, reaching out to grab my suitcase. Instead he grabbed my outstretched hand with his. "I go by Austin," he said with a grin. I couldn't help but smiel back. God he was cute. "Sorry for the mix-up," he said, grabbing his suticase before heading back to the people who were waiting for him.
"Finally," Sydney said. "Shut up," I said as she rolled her eyes at me. "Lex! Oh my god!" I turned around as one of the younger girls on the team came running up to me, jumping up and down. "What? Shannon, what?" I asked her, confused. "Don't you KNOW who that is?!" she said, out of breath.
"Who? What are you talking about?"
"That boy you were just talking to?! That was Austin Mahone! Oh my god, how did you not know?! He's like, famous!"
So that's why his name sounded so familiar. I then realized I had heard my younger sister rave about this kid and his music. Apparently he was pretty talented. I felt kind of dumb for not recognizing him. "Was he flirting with you?!" Shannon squealed, her eyes wide. "What? No.. He just grabbed my suitcase by accident, that's all," I said, looking over my shoulder to see if he was still here. But he wasn't, he had already left. My heart sank a little, thinking that I would probably never see him again. Even though I didn't even know him.. He was just so attractive. "Alright girls, it's time to head to the bus. Everyone got there bags?" Coach Kelly shouted overtop all the excitement. Everyone nodded. "Good. Let's go." As we were walking toward the busses, I couldn't get his smile out of my head. Little did I know that I was wrong.. That wouldnt' be the last time I saw him.
