I frantically ran around the room, grabbing every article of dance clothing I owned. I crammed random jazz shoes, leotards, and sparkly sports bras all into my duffel bag. "Honey, you almost ready?" I let out a deep sigh before yelling back "YES MOTHER." My mom was always worried about being on time. For her, if you weren't ten minutes early, then you were late. "Just checking sweetie. We should get going soon, your flight leaves in less than two hours," my mom said as she leaned against the doorway to my bedroom. "I know, I know. I'm looking for the bottoms to my hip hop costume. Have you--" "They're hanging up in the laundry room. I'll go grab them," my mom interrupted, turning back down the hallway. I ran my fingers through my long, blonde hair, mentally going over what exactly I needed to pack for this competition. This was a huge deal. Probably the biggest dance competition I've ever danced in.. and I've competed a lot. I've been dancing since I was three years old, but I joined the Elite Dance competition team five years ago. Competing was so much fun; it gave me the biggest adrenaline rush. Today the team was flying down to Orlando, Florida, to compete at a competition that would be held at Universal Studios. Two of my favorite things, dancing and rollercoasters.. I was beyond excited. We'd be there for a couple weeks; it was a five day competition, and then we were going to attend several dance conventions; which was why I was trying to fit everything I owned into a duffel bag and a suitcase. "Lex?" my mom called from downstairs. "Coming," I shouted back, slinging my duffel bag over my shoulder and grabbing my suitcase by the handle, lugging it all downstairs.
I hopped into the passenger seat of my mom's Lexus SUV after shoving everything into the trunk. Thirty minutes later, we pulled up to the airport. My mom helped me carry everything inside and get myself and my suitcase checked into my flight. After I passed through security, I recognized several of the girls from my team, and my coach. They were all wearing the black quarter zip jackets that had our team name sparkling on the back. "Lex!" I glanced over toward the terminal where my plane was supposed to be and saw my two best friends, Sydney and Meredith. I hugged my mom goodbye, and drug all my luggage towards them as fast as I could. I hadn't seen them since school had gotten out for the summer. They ran toward me, and I dropped my bags to greet them with a bear hug. "Missed you, brat," Sydney said with a smirk. Meredith helped me with my bags as we walked back to the gate and got lined up to board the plane. "How excited are you? For the comp? It's all I've been thinking about for weeks," Mer said, her eyes wide. She was kind of a perfectionist, especially when it came to dancing. "We know," Sydney said, nudging me. "I'm beyond excited," I said, laughing. After saying hi to my coaches, we soon boarded the plane and sat in a row by ourselves. All I could think about was the competition. It was literally consuming my life.. Little did I know that this would soon change when I stepped off the plane and set foot in Florida.
