Chapter 3 - The Return
It was the middle of the summer in the year 2011, and the recession was slowly diminishing. More jobs were available, and food prices had decreased because of the increase in sales. Small stores and family-run businesses were making a come-back as people could pay for quality.
However, it wasn’t all good news.
In Montville Town gangs still operated, murders were frequent – both gang members and innocent civilians – and thefts were on the rise. The ES gang, otherwise known as Eastern Saints, had taken over Montville Town and Old Ferryview. Unlike most other gangs, it wasn’t readily clear who the Eastern Saints were controlled by. Nobody had the courage to stand against their powerful members and find out.
Morning had now descended upon the cobra’s headquarters; in that time, many changes had been made. Rico and Georgia had been the only two survivors from that dreadful night, and they felt it more keenly than ever.
After they had been left for dead both, Rico and Georgia had managed to climb into the jeep they had arrived in, which had now been perforated in a myriad of places and start the engine. Working together, with Rico accelerating, Georgia braking and sharing the steering, they had managed to endure the pain, so they could get to Dr Reynolds.
Dr Reynolds was also their landlord and so had a vested interest in them being alive, more than that; they could class him as a friend, even though he was never part of their gang. That on the streets was highly unusual.
When they arrived at his large sprawling house, the long journey had taken its effect, and with Rico no longer able to move his leg and brake they slammed into his garage. In fact, this was a blessing in disguise as soon after slamming into the garage, they both fell into a pain fuelled sleep, which would have surely killed them if no one had taken notice of their arrival. If it wasn’t for all the commotion in the Doctor’s drive, they may not have been noticed and received the attention they needed so badly.
Luckily, Dr Reynolds was the first on the scene, instantly recognizing the cobra’s youngest members and dashing to help. Rather than any animosity towards the gangs, he simply felt sadness for those who he would so often see injured. He always felt it was a way of life. Even so, who was to say their cause is any less worthy than a soldier, who would also be fighting for his or her life, and those of his friends? In his opinion, it wasn’t any different.
It was not until the following sun soaked morning that Rico and Georgia had opened their eyes again, finding Dr Reynolds perched at the foot of the twin beds they had slept on. He soon glanced up and dashed to their side upon seeing that they were awake. His greying hair was parted at the side of his head, and his brown eyes were narrowed with concern.
“How do you feel? You’ve both had some deep bullet wounds and lost a fair amount of blood. I don’t know how either of you made it here!” Dr Reynolds spoke with his voice a mixture of curiosity, fear and admiration.
Both Rico and Georgia murmured, clearly in much pain, that they were absolutely fine. Dr Reynolds felt silly for asking such a question and gave them a half-hearted smile. One of the first rules of being in a gang was to deny any kind of weakness, which was not the best thing to do when you were injured and offered help by a doctor.
After careful consideration, he asked a far more appropriate question.
“What the hell happened to you?”
Rico and Georgia both took to explain their plight, the ambush and how everyone else had been killed at Cornfields.
“All gone, all of them” Georgia whispered, her eyes a mix of fury and sadness.
