Chapter 4 - Escape
Georgia was right.
Rico spun, throwing Georgia back into the passenger seat of the van. Grabbing the enormous steering wheel he yelled to Darren and Tony; they had around a minute to get back into the van or he was going to leave them. When certain death comes chasing, it’s easy to walk blind to the ties that bind.
Just as Rico flicked the van into gear both Darren and Tony crashed into the back; screaming with fear as the black van sped towards them. Rico could see the black van becoming larger and larger in his mirrors; in an explosion of adrenalin he slammed his foot to the floor.
Instead of dashing off into the distance he had sent the wheels into a ferocious spin, which had only resulted in great plumes of white smoke fleeing the squealing tyres.
Now they had less than a hundred metres between them and the rapidly gaining van. Rico swore; he had once last chance.
Slowly he released the clutch, selected first gear and this time he eased on the throttle, managing to keep enough traction to slowly get the lethargic van moving. As he waited for the van to slowly reach any kind of speed, the black van was now just metres behind.
Suddenly Rico felt a sharp jolt and the van began to escape his grasp, it fought, diving left and right all the time Rico steering into the spins and trying to gain some control.
Hundreds of bullets pierced through the back of the van, they all dropped to the floor in vain attempts of escape. Rico was now driving with his head below the steering wheel while the van impersonated an angry Spanish bull, desperate to get rid of its occupants.
The bullets travelled all through the van before piercing the back doors and then diving out of the front windscreen, so far nobody had been hurt, but how long could that continue with such a barrage of bullets.
As Rico dared a peak over the steering wheel, he was confronted by the sight of a large office block at the end of the road; completely blocking any exit. Still the barrage of bullets rained down on them, Rico knew he had to do something quick, and it was then that he had an idea. It was a little risky or as others would say; completely insane.
“Hold tight everybody!” Rico yelled as he turned the van towards the large office block which was now only a hundred yards or so away. The black van behind was now only a few metres behind.
Just as he was maybe five metres away Rico slammed on the handbrake, “just enough to turn but not to lose the momentum…” he muttered his face now a wreck of concentration and tension.
This time Rico gained traction at just the right moment and sped away from the wall. The van behind had seen that the Cobra’s were seemingly driving into a wall but thought that if they kept as close as possible behind they would be able to crush them against the bricks.
Instead, as the Cobra’s skidded out of the way the black van narrowly missed them as it locked its wheels and flew into the wall instead. As Rico sped away alarm bells rung and hundreds of people poured out of the office block, police would arrive soon enough and would think it was Christmas when they found so many guns. That would look fantastic on their reports. Georgia let out a sigh of relief, a grin spreading over her face as she plucked her hands from the seat.
Darren and Tony bound up in the back giving each other high fives and shouting insults at the men beached into the wall.
“Nice driving,” Georgia winked at Rico as she climbed through the gap and into the passenger seat at the front.
“Where do we go now? They know our base and David will just send more people. We were lucky this time; you can’t live for long on luck...” Rico mused, the success of escaping an almost certain death had escaped him as he realised it would lead to just another certain death.
