There I stood frozen, my feet glued to the floor while my eyes were locked with this stranger's eyes. I felt my heart start to beat faster and my hands start to become clammy.

I became anxious and a nervous feeling became know in my stomach. I mean, what was a man, who had a gun on his hip with no visible badge, doing in a school? Surely the administration didn't need security. Right?

"Are you lost?" He voiced, his tone low and soft, opposite of his appearance. The man just screamed danger. By the way he stood, with his arms crossed, and the way he held himself, chest out and back straight, he was absolutely intimidating.

His brown hair was so long that it hung in his face. He had grey eyes that looked so guarded and cold.

I didn't know what he expected. His eyes trailed over me, assessing me.

He tried again. "Are you lost?" He paused, waiting for an answer, but when given none he blew out a frustrated breath. "Do you need Mr. Raven?"

Just because I didn't want him to blow my head off, I answered by shaking my head. The man didn't seem pleased by this because he rolled his eyes and ran a hand through his hair. He braced himself against Nathaniel's desk.

I inhaled a breath and let it out slowly.

"Relax," he said.

Right. Why in the right mind would someone relax if they were in this situation. I could not see a freaking badge. And how in the blue bells did he know my brother-in-law?

Freaked out? Um, yeah. Panicking yet? No, for now.

"Do you speak at all? Why are you here? I've never seen you around at the school before."

He got no answer.

He pushed off the desk with force and stalked towards me.

"Who are you?" His voice lowered immensely. This one sided conversation went to curious to threatening in two minutes.

He got close enough to me where he could reach out and grab me without moving his whole body. And it was too close for my comfort.

Panicking? Yes.

A voice cut through the room like ice.

"Malcolm? What are you doing here?" Nathaniel asked.

Malcolm's eyes left me for a moment to acknowledge Nathaniel at the door, and then his eyes were back on me. "Nathaniel," he greeted.

I stepped back and angled myself so I could look at both men and keep an eye on Malcolm. A bit of relief filled me as Nathaniel walked between us.

"Malcolm," Nathaniel said as he gave me a warm smile, "have you met my sister-in-law? Malcolm, Chandler. Chandler, this is Malcolm Sage. He's the town's sheriff. The youngest in history at twenty-six. Isn't that right Malcolm."

Malcolm nodded forcefully. His jaw tensed. "Is she here for a visit?"

"No. She's a permanent stay. With Alyson and I, where she belongs."

I rolled my eyes. If only that was true.

A permanent stay," Malcolm whispered to himself, then spoke up, "Well I need to speak with you. It's about our situation."

Nathaniel nodded his head. And the. To me said, "I think Alexandra is waiting for you outside to give you a ride home, since I have to talk with Malcolm and then I have tutoring after. I don't want to make you wait that long to get home." That was the whole reason I came down: for a ride home.
