I made it down two blocks from Jeremy's studio and he still hadn't come after me. I was surprised because I thought with his extra hearing abilities that he would be after me even before I got to his door. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't disappointed, but I was just dumbfounded that he just let me walk out his door.
But I was gad because earlier in the evening I had gotten a text from Lex that was an SOS. She didn't say why just that I needed to get outside as fast as I could. I had no idea how she knew where I was, but she said she would be waiting for me a ways away from Jeremy's studio.
I had just passed a jewelry shop when I heard the screeching of tires. I whipped my head around so fast that I could have given myself whiplash. I recognized Lex's car by the light of a street lamp. She braked the car at a screeching halt as soon as she got to where I was standing, and then she threw open the door.
"Get in!" She whisper yelled.
I did as I was told and hastily got into the car. I barely had time to get my seatbelt secured and Lex had already stomped on the gas.
"What is going on?!" I cried. She was acting as if there was someone chasing her.
She gave me a side glance, but had to take a second look and raised an eyebrow. "What are you wearing?" She turned the car a sharp left and sped up.
I looked down and saw that I was still in Jeremy's boxers and black T-shirt that he had let me wear for bed. I had forgotten to change my clothes as I was too concerned with trying to sneak away. "Clothes." I said shortly. "Why the SOS? You're scaring the living crap out of me."
Lex groaned and I saw her hands clench the steering wheel. She shook her head and ran a hand through her hair. "I went with Ren after the track fiasco yesterday. Yeah, it didn't go over very well."
"I remember." After Ren and Jeremy had come to get us at a dirt race track, Ren had some not nice things to say to Lex. He basically verbally attacked her for being young and immature.
"Well, I did something stupid. After we had left we went to his house. And he... He... Ehhh..."
"He what?" She took a few moments to organize her thoughts. I wanted to know what he had done to her. He had seemed so pissed when he showed up at the track so when she said he was worse the thought of him hurting her came to my mind.
I looked over her, searching for any signs of bruising or red marks. But I saw nothing. Not a dark blond hair was out of place, though I thought she did look sorta pale.
"He told me some things. Like heart-stopping-unbelievable-never-going-to-exist things."
I was going to take a wild guess. "He's a wolf."
She hit her steering wheel with her fist and screeched, "He's a fucking wolf! A damn wolf! A fucking damn wolf!
"And you freaked out."
"Yes. I sorta slapped him then left. And I've been driving around for the last three hours."
"Why did you hit him?"
"Okay it was my fault, but still. He deserved it."
There had to be more. She kept her eyes from looking at mine, so I knew she must of been keeping something else from me."What did you do?"
She sighed in defeat."I freaking attacked him. Like lips and hands. And it was so fucking amazing. We're amazing. It got heated and the anticipation was boiling in my stomach. And then he pushed me away! I mean come on! He was into it. He kissed me back!"
My mouth with the agape for a couple of seconds"What did he say?"
"He said that he wanted me. That he had feelings for me, but he didn't want to loose me like he lost her."
My eyes widened. Malcolm had had a lover. "Oh, no." Somehow that surprised me. By our first meeting he didn't seem like a man who wanted a family. I remember he seemed very cold and very distant. But to listen to Lex's confession about his own feelings about her makes me second-guess my feelings about him. Could he actually be the one for her? Or can you just be looking for some, excitement some adventure? But then again, who am I to judge. I'm finding myself falling for a man who is almost five years older than me.
"Oh, yes. He's been married. She died years ago, when the reservation was attacked and their water source was contaminated by poison."
Pieces clicked in my mind. I remember Alyson once telling me a story of Nathaniel's family being killed by the same incident.
She look at me with sad eyes. It was as if I could see into her soul. She looked broken and lost. My heart cried out for her and what she was feeling, for it was as if the same feeling she felt was the feeling I experienced when I lost my dad not that long ago."Was I out of line? I mean, was that mature of me? Because I don't want him to see me any more as a child as he has been." I could see the tears forming the corner of her eyes. But I knew, I just knew that she would never let them fall.
"You have a right to be angry." I said. "But do you know the whole story? Do you know how she died? You left before he could explain. Don't you think you should go back, and ask for the rest of the truth?"
She sighed. "It's just knowing that I'm not the only woman he's had feelings for really hurts. He's my first, ya know? But I'm not his. And it hurts so bad. I feel like I'm his second choice, in second place to his heart."
Lex came to a stop in front of a glorious, two story, white house that took my breath away. It stood tall, majestic, and proud. There were no lights on. And the shadows from the street lamps casted over the white paint. In some way the house looked cold, lonely, and barely lived in. No wonder Lex longed for the comfort of friends. Her house looked foreign.
She threw her seatbelt off and flung her door open. I followed and was behind all the way to the front door.
"Okay. There's a reason why I brought you here." She talked in a hushed voice. She led me through the foyer and down a hallway towards the stairs that led to the second floor. We entered a room that had neon purple paint with black roses on the wall and the same theme, I found, was present throughout her room. And yet there was no presence of a little girl, only evidence of a young woman trying to survive in desolated comfort.
She closed her door softly, and went to her closet and pulled out something I would have never thought Lex would ever get her hands on.
"Holy shit, Lex! What is that?" I couldn't take my eyes off of what she held in her hands. All of my reason left me, as well as the problem with Malcolm. What was now at our immediate attention, well mostly mine, was the weapon that she held in her hand.
She held the crossbow up and aimed it right at me. "Long story short. I was exploring my house. I found this in the basement below the basement that I happened upon a few days ago. Chandler, my parents have an arsenal that I've never known about. And when I say arsenal, I mean bow and arrows, guns, and a whole bunch of torture devices. So I'm kinda freaking our right now. I mean, nothing about this screams kinky just plain dangerous!"
"Oh my god." Could this seriously be real? That thing looked heavy and awkward to hold. "Why do you think they have all those weapons?"
Lex snorted. "Not to welcome new neighbors obviously."
"Come on Lex." I grumbled.
She gently put the weapon on her bed and slumped to the floor in defeat. "I honestly have no idea."
We sat for a moment together in silence. I was so exhausted I could have started counting sheep. But I had to stay awake, I had to stay alert for whatever dangers awaited us, I could tell would not end in peace.
"You don't think that...that-"
I was quick to reassure her, "Of course not..." But deep down there was something that told me not everything was as clear as it seems. "Right?"
"No. There's no way. My parents being hunters! The only things that they are good at are real estate, money, and ruining my life."
"Lex you can't be serious." I said.
"Oh, but I can. I mean. It makes sense. Months ago they tried to keep me away from the reservation and my friends, which they never gave me a reason for. And then I find my parents secret weapon fetish. Not too soon after that I find out that the man that I'm failing in love with and my friends that I've known for all of my life turn out to be mythical werewolves. I guess there's nothing to worry about, right?"
"Chandler! Chandler where are you!"
Lex jumped up from the floor as Jeremy came through her bedroom door. "What are you doing in my house?" Her hands were on her hips and she stood in a defiant stance.
Jeremy seemed out of breath as he leaned against the door frame. And all his focus was on me. "You. Out. Now." His voice was rough and he had dark circles under his eyes.
I didn't know what to say as he pointed at me and gazed at me with fire in his eyes. His mouth was set in a scowl and I thought for a second that I could pee my pants.
"I... Jeremy? What are you doing here?"
"Yeah, please explain." Lex chimed in.
His eyes briefly went to Lex, "Malcolm's outside he needs to talk to you." He was obviously dismissing her, but at least he wasn't literally kicking her out. He then approached me and crouched to where I was sitting. "And you and I are going back to my house and for the love of God we are going back to get the rest of the sleep the night will allow and then we are going to talk about your little escapedee." His voice was low and demanding.
"Okay." Not wanting to argue with him I got up and moved to the door. I noticed Lex missing from the room and looked back to see Jeremy still crouched by the bed.
His eyes raked my body up and down. I felt my cheeks heat as I realized I was wearing next to nothing in his presence. It was different when we were in bed, because I was covered with his sheets. But now in the open, I really felt naked.
"God, you're killing me."
"You have great fashion tastes."
I almost laughed as he got up took me into his arms. His head bent down slowly as captured my lips in a kiss. His tongue entered my mouth immediately. He tasted sweet and he felt hot. I met his pace as I kissed him back.
He set my body aflame and his addictive taste consumed me. I wanted more. No, I needed more.
He slowed the kiss until he started to peck my cheeks and forehead. "You scared me."
"Sorry." I whispered. For a moment I was out of breath, but at the same time I wanted his lips on mine again.
He scoffed. "No you're not." He knew me so well. I wasn't sorry. I knew what I was doing. I knew I decided to leave, and I wasn't fearful of the consequences. He moved my hair out of my face and smoothed it back. "Never do it again."
"Okay."
Jeremy led me out of the room and we descended down the stairs. And that's when the feeling happened. The feeling of uneasiness and uncertainty came upon me. I felt as if I was falling.
And I truly was.
I felt my hand get torn out of Jeremy's grip and as I lost my balance I felt him reach for me. But it was too late. I was already falling.
Then it went dark. When I came to I didn't understand what was happening. I saw a man with a bald head dressed in what looked in almost armor-like clothes. His eyes were dark and cold and a permanent sneer was painted on on his face. I could hear him scoff at something someone said. But I could barely keep my eyes open as a headache in my head seemed to advance in pain.
In the corner of the brick room I could hardly make out a body of a woman. Her hair was fair almost white, but it was covering her face so I can see who she was. She was obviously dead. There was no evidence of breathing.
A scream scared me. It had come from Lex. "Please don't do this. Just let them leave. I'll do anything! Anything!"
The bald man turned and glared at Lex. He pointed his gun that he had trained on Malcolm onto Lex. His hatred and his loathing seeped out of his eyes. If looks could kill his would. "I tried to raise you right. But Alexandra, it seems that I had lead you down the wrong path."
I watched Lex as she raised her hands as an effort to show him she meant no harm. "Raise me? You were never here. You and mom were always gone."
"Yes. And I let you run around like an uneducated wild child. And you made relationships with these heathens!"
"Heathens! They are my friends! They are my family! You left me alone. So I had to have someone. Whether it be Grace's parents who act like my own, who I've adopted as my own. Or whether it be my friends Angel, Grace, or even Chandler, who you've tied up like a dog!"
"Because she is a dog! They all are! They will never be enough for you. They will turn their backs on you. Because you, my dear child, derive from a line, a wonderful and glorious line of the blood that is pure. And you i'm not to be tainted by this man." He gestured to Malcolm with his hand.
But didn't he know I was human? Couldn't he tell? I started to panic, and my stomach started to roll.
The bald man must've been her father. It was a shame that he had a daughter like Lex. "After this is finished Alexandra, we are leaving and we are never coming back."
I watched as Malcolm tore Lex away from her father and behind him, shielding her with his body. I now comprehended that the dungeon Lex and I had previously been talking about in her room. This was the room where all the weapons were. And I realized I was caged. I was separated from everyone by iron bars.
And once again I lost consciousness. The next time when I awoke the walls around us were engulfed in flames. I watched as the flames started small, but then they slowly started to eat the walls around us. From a distance I could see Jeremy's body lying there helpless. In the other direction I could see Malcolm fighting off Lex's dad while he barely hung onto his consciousness. Malcolm had a fatal wound to his head. I could see the blood starting this bird out of the lawn cut that reached from the top of his hairline to his brow. He also had a wound in his side, That he so often put his hand on to check, and each time he pulled away his hand was smeared with more and more blood.
I fought my best to keep consciousness at the site of the blood that I saw. I could not believe my eyes. And I feared the worst for Jeremy. I wanted to go to him but I couldn't. I try to fight the restraints, but being a mortal and having no strength whatsoever, kept me from getting free from the iron chains.
I felt myself being lifted. It was Nathaniel. He held me close, trying to keep the smoke from the flames from invading into my lungs. He carried me out of the cage and past Jeremy's body.
I felt helpless and it sucked.
I moaned. "Jeremy...Someone needs to get Jeremy." Pain assaulted me in my head and tears came to my eyes.
"Jeremy," I whispered.
Nathaniel's chest rumbled as he spoke. "I'll go back for him."
I didn't even realize that he was here until he took me in his arms. What had happened? My thoughts were jumbled because of my in and out awareness of my mind. I tried to put prices together, but there were black holes in my memory.
As Nathaniel ascended up the stairs I saw a flash of movement. It happened so fast. Lex's father reached for his gun that had been discarded. I watched as his aimed trained on Malcolm. Malcolm, realizing that he starring down a barrel of a gun, did nothing. He just stood there. Lex then moved fast as she rushed to Malcolm.
And she cried out, "Ren!"
The shot rang out and the bullet hit its target. Maybe it was really intended for Malcolm, and hit Lex instead. Or by chance Lex's dad knew she would jump in front of the bullet to save the man she loved, and he intended on just that.
Nathaniel whipped around in haste and we both watched as Lex fell to the ground, and at the same time Malcolm took his chance and snapped the hunter's neck.
Nathaniel turned and rushed up the stairs while my screams and pleas to be taken to my best friend were ignored.
And along with my cries were the screams of a man broken, torn in two.So there's two more chapters and then it's all over for this book....... Whoot Whoot! Fan comment vote!
