PROLOGUE
"Kitty stay here!" I command as I lay her gently on the concrete.
"Sure...no problem." She says as I run back out of the sizzling hole. More buildings are still burning and collapsing on themselves. The other X-Men are still fighting the enemy. Even after all the numbers we've defeated, more still come. I see Ororo wrapping a few in an icy cold wind.
"Ororo!" I yell.
She doesn't look at me. I run into battle and start taking down as many as I can. The feeling of contact with my fists and wings becomes a routine. Body after body, face after face. I didn't care if they were human or mutant, as long as I could get to my father to stop him.
"How many are there?" I ask as I reach Ororo.
"A lot-too many." She says and takes down a few more people.
Suddenly, Ororo commands fog to errupt around us. This way, our enemies would be blind and we could still see. We were making progress when, out of nowhere, a ball of flame is shot towards my direction. I dodge by the skin of my teeth. I see a woman part the fog and flames are entirely coating her body.
"Well, so this is the impish girl Robert has told me about." She launches another round of flames. They wiz past my body as I dodge bullet after bullet.
I felt a tugging sensation in my gut as I commanded an icy cold wind current to engulf and swirl around her. Her eyes buldge.
"I thought you knew better." I said as her hands fly to her throat as if she's choking. "Don't you know a flame dies out when it doesn't get any oxygen?" She collapses to the ground.
I run towards the rest of the onslaught. I needed to find my father. I launch myself off the ground and start circling over head. Even with my hawk like vision, it's still a struggle to see throught the smoke and flames. Down below, many are fighting. I still don't know what the enemies cause is though.
"Daniella!"
I glance behind my shoulder to see Warren flying towards me.
"Warren!" He's coated in blood, and I was praying it wasn't his.
"Are you OK?" He asks.
I nod and he surveys the city below.
"Warren, I need to find my dad. If I stop him-"
He grabs my hand and we're off. We fly out of the outskirts of town and we near the heart.
Here, more buildings have been tore down and the fires seemed to intensify. I cough and blink my eyes as the smoke billows out from below. Clearing the smoke, I can see a large steel structure below. On the top, a large machine is propped up while zapping buildings and people. Everything turns to ash on impact.
Warren takes us to a still standing building and we land gently on our feet.
"There he is." Warren points to the structure and I can see my father sitting in a seat behind many controls.
I bite my lip hard enough to make it bleed. I was one hundred percent sure that I did not want to go down there in the inferno.
"Warren...I'm not sure..."
He glances at me. "I'll come with you."
I shook my head. "It's not that it's just...what if I do go in there...and something bad happens. What if I don't make it out?"
He pulls me in for a hug. "I know you will. I will stick right by your side-"
"That's just it Warren. I don't want you to come. I don't want anything bad to happen to you."
"Don't worry-"
I pull away. "Promise me you won't go in there? It's way to dangerous."
He sighs and hangs his head. "I promise."
My burden is lightened a little and I step away.
Before I can jump off the building, Warren says, "Dani..."
I look at him, and see the pain on his face.
"Warren?" I ask as he rushes towards me. Instead of hugging me again, he kisses me fully on the lips. See, I've kissed Warren a few times before, but none of them could compare to this. It was like he didn't want to let me go at all. Eventually I had to pull away.
"I love you Warren."
"I love you to." His voice cracks.
I give him a reasurring squeeze and throw myself off the building and into the inferno.
