I could hear the sirens before I could see the lights and cars.
The immediate thought that came to me was my mom missing or in trouble. No No No, you are just being paranoid. How can somebody that you just met know if something will happen to your mom? I am sure that the source of the sirens are coming from somewhere else. But it wasn’t like we lived in the city. It was either our house or our neighbor that lived about a mile one way and the other neighbor a mile the other way. And I just passed one of them.
The sound was getting quicker when suddenly one of those K-9 cop cars goes speeding past me, the dog in the back barking wildly. I quickly speed up and go fast as I can. I reach my house to see three police cars, including the K-9 cop car, parked in my long driveway. There were cops all over and the dog was sniffing around and whining.
I ride my bike past all of the commotion and into my garage where I parked my pick and walked inside.
“No, I was up stairs!” my dad says angrily to a cop.
“And what were you doing?” the cop asks calmly, pen ready in hand.
“Getting ready to take my shower.”
“Mmmm-mmhhh… Well that is all that we need for now. We will continue searching and let you know if we find anything. As of right now I will need to talk to you tomorrow once everything has settled,” the cop explains.
“Hey Dad,” I greet once the cop leaves.
Dad looks at me, sighs, and puts his head in his hands. “Mom’s gone.”
“I know,” I say plainly. Dad sighs again and runs his hand through his hair, messing it up.
“How did it happen?” I ask after awhile since I know that Dad won’t tell me on his own.
“That’s the mystery-“ that word seems to keep coming up tonight “-of it. I went upstairs to take my shower like I do every night at eight. I was about to turn on the water when I hear a crash. I quickly go downstairs and call out to your mom but don’t get an answer. I find the plate that she had been washing on the floor, broken to bits, and then I heard a scream and footsteps coming from the living room. I run into there and see someone’s foot as they run through the door and slam it shut. I went outside but it was too dark to see anything.”
“So you called the cops?” I ask.
“Yup. Now go up to bed.”
“Ok… Are you coming?” I ask.
“Not now… I need to think.”
I slowly climbed the stairs. I look back at Dad. His head was laying on the table with his arms around his head. I felt bad for him.
After I brushed my teeth and changed into my PJ’s, I laid in my bed thinking about all that just happened. How would Mystery know about my mom getting kidnapped? What if Mystery was behind this? And how could someone just melt into the shadows like that? Dad implied that that is what happened with Mom’s kidnapper. It wasn’t even that dark! It had to be about 8:30 when Mystery appeared. I picture her in my head. She had pale white skin that worked for her, long black hair, and her eyes! They were pinkish or something! How was that possible!? I hadn’t really noticed at the time but now that I looked back… They seemed to be glowing!
Why wouldn’t Mystery tell me her real name? I mean, I don’t think that Mystery is her real name. Who was it that took my mom and why would they? She couldn’t have done anything to them that I was aware of… It wasn’t as if she was in the mob of rich or anything. We couldn’t pay a big ransom. What if- I hear a knock on the door.
“Are you still awake?” Dad asks in a hushed whisper.
“Yes, Dad.”
“Did you feed your fish?” Leave it to Dad to think of talking to me about that.
“No.”
“You should do that then. G’night, son.”
“Night Dad,” I say as he shuts the door. I throw back my covers and slowly get out of bed. I walk over to my windowsill where my 5 gallon fish bowl sits. My Black Moor goldfish looks at me wearily. I put in a couple of fish flakes. It takes awhile for him to find the food because of his bad eyesight. Once I make sure he is fed I go back to bed.
Tomorrow I am going to find Mystery. She has something to do with Mom’s disappearance, I know it.
