Chapter Three

"Ok, follow me," I tell Jared as I meet him in the driveway. He nods his head as he surveys the place.

"So what were you looking for?" I ask as we near the barn.

"Oh, I need a thing of eggs for the miss's and for the land about a dozen or two adults," Jared says after thinking for a while.

"Ok, would you like the week package or two?"

"Two week package," Jared replies.

"Ok. I'll go get them and you can go out back and look at the adults you would like."

Jared nods and starts to walk towards the back of the barn. I head towards the big stall where I keep the chicks and eggs.

I grab a small container that Jared gives back every week and put in two and a half dozen in it. I only had about a dozen left. I quickly check on the chicks again and walk out of the stall and walk around the barn.

I see Jared leaning over one of my cages examining the quail.

"So what do you think?" I ask and lean against one of the cages.

"I think that these are better then Sam's. Which ones are the oldest?"

"These right here," I say and point to one of the cages.

"OK, can I have a dozen females and half a dozen males?"

"Yeah sure," I say and grab one of my crates.

As I start to catch as many birds that I can I say casually to Jared, "So, have you noticed anything strange around town lately?"

Jared seems to think awhile, "Well, isn't there always something strange going on?"

"Well, yeah I guess but I was talking about more then ordinary things... Like people with purplish blue eyes or pink eyes or people that just seem to disappear..."

Jared smiles and leans close to me, "I hear that at ol' McCombs, Sandy saw a strange man in a suit outside her window! He had looked at her and smiled. Before she could react he had disappeared! She even swear on a  stack of bibles which is saying a lot for her."

I nod and continue to grab the quail.

"Anything else?"

"Well... I-I did see a girl..."

My ears perk up and I look at him curiously.

"What was she like?" I persist.

"Well... She had this pure black hair with pale skin... And these bright eyes... They were like you explained... And sh-she spoke to me..."

Jared looked really rattled up, what had she done?

"And sh-she said that she knew things that I didn't... I told her that I didn't believe her and to prove it if she knew so much. Then she said that she was sorry about my mother and that I should watch what my wife does when she goes out for girls night... And that Gem was failing Social Studies. Then she was gone," Jared explains and ends with a flourish of his hands.

Wow, how had she known that? Gem was Jareds daughter and I had thought that Gem was good at school?

"Wow," I say and finish putting in all the quail. I wasn't sure if I got the right genders but he couldn't tell so it will be fine.

"Ok, so anyway how much will that be this time?"

"Um..." I have to think about it. A dozen and a half and at 4 dollars each... That's 72! And the eggs are 3 dollars a dozen... That's about another 8 dollars. That's 80 dollars!
