I hesitated at my husband's words, shocked at every single letter of those string of words. Yes, I had been thinking that it was weird they had all come from Rebeccca's points of view but never had I actually thought about putting it into spoken words. All my worries came to the front of my mind, swirling around my head like hungry sharks, ready to strike. Nothing had felt so frustratingly hope-less.
I must have been standing there, expression-less and lost in my mind, for a while because Thomas then reached up and with one strong hand stroked my cheek with a gentle brush of his rough yet gentle skin.
"Sorry, sorry...I was just thinking..." I sighed, pulling stray hairs away from my face as I spoke. I turned away from Thomas, not wanting to look at him in worry that he would think I was being rude.
"No, don't be. Shh, come on sweetie. What's wrong?" His silky smooth voice was like bliss to my burning ears of shame, and I obeyed my heart and let my hands fall to my side and listened to him. His arms snaked swiftly around my waist, pulling me backwards into his open arms, resting me carefully on his warm body. I smiled, pressing myself into his warmth, not wanting to ever leave the blissed comfort.
The only murmurs of speech that slipped through my lips were odd moans of pleasure, his muscles tensing and relaxing against my back, silently reminding me of the protetion that he offered. With Thomas, I would be safe from anything that wished to harm me or family.
His eyebrows knitted together and his eyes darkened as he gaze down at me with his caring gaze. "Darling, please. Speak to me."
The new soft approach was definitely hitting home on me so I let everything loose and huffed, sagging against his body, searching for support. Instead, he gripped me by my shoulders and slowly spun me round, forcing me to reach his gaze when he gently tilted my head upwards.
"Speak to me."
Those words were like silk and all I wanted to do was to jump him right then and there but my conscionce brought my mind back to the present situation. Rebecca.
"Fine," I mumbled, trying to clear my head from my distracting thoughts. "I'm just...just worried if we did the right thing. I mean, Sam is stil young, maybe we should have waited until he'd grown up and moved out.."
Thomas interupted me, smashing his lips against mine and I gladly welcomed him, opening my mouth and allowing him in. Our tounges intwined together, mixing our saliva to make one, until he pulled away from my yearning lips.
"Yes, continue." He whispered soothingly, and all I could do was obey. A voice like his should be classified as a weapon of bribery. Think of the effects it had on me!
Nervously, I continued, not sure how to finish. "My point is...as much as I love Rebecca, has this been a bit too quick?...."
Thomas shook his head, frowing slightly as he did so. "Caroline,no, stop doubting yourself. This is the perfect life for us. How could this be wrong?!"
He must have picked up on my hesitation because he quickly spoke again, pulling me into a loving embrace that filled my heart with even more love and pleasure."Look, just listen and take in what I say when I tell you that you are doing fine. I'm living the dream, here with you and Sam. And I truly do believe that Rebecca is a gift from heavon above."
I sighed lovingly, pulling myself closer to his reassuring muscles that effectively wrapped themselves around me.
"Of course."
The sudden beeping of the cooker was enough to turn my attention else where and I rushed over to it, fiddling with a few buttons until it finally fell silent all but the soft hum of the oven. Grabbing my oven gloves, I pushed my hands into them and opened up the cooker door, pulling out the baking tray and resting it on a wooden block on one of the kitchen counters.
"Dinners just ready, can you tell the kids?" I asked quickly, glancing at him now and then as I scuttled flusterdly around the kitcken with my apron half hanging off. You could say, I looked a right state. Not that I cared or anything.
Thomas nodded his head and walked out of the room, leaving me alone in the busy, hot kitchen that was quickly filling with a clear smoke that was billowing from one cooker.
Cursing, I flung open the door and pulled out what was supposed to be a chicken breast but turned out to be a char-grilled ash tray. What a lame excuse of a cook I was!
I tossed it into the bin and started to dish out the soup into the boen china bowls, and placed the garlic bread into a wicker woven basket that was lined with kitchen roll. Thomas appeared to have already set the table because when I turned back around to facetowards the TV, all I was faced with was 4 mats with matching mats for the glasses, cups, napkins, and the cutlery.
I was dishing the plates out onto the places when they all came crashing through the door. Thomas leading, singing as he went, tossing an imagionary hat off of his head as he marched over to the table and sat at one side. Sam followed with a confident, laughing posture, and lastly was Rebecca, the timidest of them all.
I cleared my throat to grab their attention before shooting btoh Sam and Thomas a look to quit it, and they did. Feeling better now that that had been cleared, I moved closer to Rebecca and knelt down so I was face to face with her.
"I'm sorry Rebecca, is it too loud? And anway, it's a school night tonight so it's probably best if you go to bed early. But, tomorrow, after school, Sam can play with you some more as well as shops, some places around town. Like the shops, parks, cinemas-"
"No, no, I would rather just spend some time at home." She paused, glancing at me and my husband meaningfully. It would be a crime to ignore the sweetness that she held deep within them. "Well, if that's okay with you Mum."
The word 'Mum' was like music to my ears, and imedietly loosened my reigns on security.
"Of course Rebecca, do whatever you please. What is ours, is yours."
------------------------------
An hour later and I'm lying in bed with Thomas, thinking about the next day. Take Rebecca to school, get to work, come back, pick up Rebecca, then leave to go for an important council meeting. All in all, boring.
"Mmmh, Carloline..." Thomas moaned, tossing onto his other side in order to face me with his tussled up hair and weary, half-open eyes. "Get some sleep, please.."
I nodded slightly, staying silent. I forced myself to relax my muscles as well as control my breathing to make it seem like I was asleep.
"Arrgh, Caroline please. Just get some rest. You've got a busy day tomorrow. And I know you're not asleep right now."
I sighed, opening my eyes and turning around to face him, smiling when I felt his arm reach around my waist in order to pull me closer to him. "That's the thing, I'm thinking of taking a day off work tomorrow."
Thomas let out an annoyed, aggravated huff and I realised that his not so long-fused temper was ready to spring into action.
"Thomas, listen to me. I'm just thinking that would be best after all this adoption thing and I still have to fill in tons of papers so I might as well just get on with it instead of just leaving it to another day." I said hurridly, relaxing slightly when I felt his muscles relax.
"Fine, " He mumbled, "But get some sleep at least."
I could see that he wasn't happy about it but I knew there was nothing I could do. In my mind, bunking off work was the best option and if he didn't agree with me then he would just have to live with it.
My eyes glanced towards his face, my mouth opening as it got ready to explain some more but nothing came out. I was just too facinated by his cute little face. His temptingly plump, rosy lips were limp yet very firm on his mouth and all I wanted to do was press them against my own in a passionate debate over dominance...
The shouting from my brain told me that sleep was indeed needed so I heaved myself up and onto my elbows, giving me enough height to reach over and place a gentle kiss on Thomas' head before I nestled myself into the calming duvet that rocked me into sleep.
