The story of Gary’s life was shocking and horrific. It sounded as if it could have come off a show like Criminal Minds or CSI. It was unbelievable what their father had done to them. It is even more unbelievable that a doctor who said Gary was a dangerous schizophrenic and incurable let him leave the mental institution. That doctor could have saved many lives by keeping him in the institution, but no. He had to set that monster free and allow him to destroy a bunch of women’s lives, including mine.
Sending the bartender away Darien looks down at me. He could tell I was about to cry but he wrapped his arm around my shoulders bringing me closer to him. All I can hear is him whisper, “Everything will be alright,” and that was when Gary walked in through the door of the bar making his way around the place until he sat a couple stools away from us. Changing my view from Gary I turn my head so I am face to face with Darien.
“Do you have the pills?” Darien asked while staring down the aisle towards Gary. Darien’s eyes that were once a light blue were now becoming darker, as if Darien was about to transform into an alien.
Nodding my head I grab the pills from the pocket of the hoodie. Grabbing about three of the tiny pills I hand them to Darien, making sure that no one would see them. Whispering into his ear I say, “The three pills will surely knock Gary out. Three pills would usually kill a small animal so this should do the trick. After that we follow him until he passes out.”
Grabbing my hand he takes the pills, he walks away slowly until he reaches the stool beside Gary. Feeling my heartbeat increase I start to believe this is a bad idea but it was too late. Darien was already sitting down beside Gary. A couple minutes of silence pass until Darien breaks open a conversation between the two of them.
I hear Darien say, “Hey what’s up man?”
Gary looks up at Darien with a dirty glare that causes me to start hyperventilating. Grabbing a couple of peanuts from the jar, I continue to hear the conversation between them.
Gary’s response to Darien is, “Nothing just drinking my Bloody Mary...”
Laughing Darien hits Gary on the back causing me to jump out of my seat. Honestly Darien, do you want to get killed. I am guessing Darien does want to die since what he says next is a complete lie, “Nice... Nice... I myself enjoy a beer or two.”
Gary becomes sarcastic now in his responses. “You look way too young to drink beer... How the hell did you get in here anyways?”
Feeling that Gary had finally murdered our plan Darien gets an amazing idea. Pointing at a random biker across the bar Darien answers, “I am here with my dad. He is over there.”
Gary follows Darien’s finger until his eyes land upon a biker with a long gray beard and tattoos all over his arms. That was Darien’s chance to drop the pills into his drink. Moving his hand ever so slightly the pills fall in, allowing our plan to end in success. This is Darien’s chance to escape from Gary. RUN DARIEN RUN!!
Getting up slowly Darien says, “Well, thanks for the conversation buddy... but I better get going. Don’t want to keep daddy waiting.”
Trying to escape, Darien jogs back over to my side but is stop by Gary. At that point Gary starts yelling at Darien in a loud voice about something that I do not understand. He voice was too loud for anyone to understand. Worried I do my best to calm myself down knowing Darien would find a way to escape. Plus if I entered into the fight I would surely get hurt by Gary in someway.
When the argument escalated into something physical Gary did a right hook nailing Darien in the jaw. Grabbing his jaw Darien does his best to fight back and soon the whole bar gets into a fight. Tears start to stream down my face. What if Gary somehow killed Darien? I would lose the only friend I allowed myself to have. Please don’t die Darien!
As I search for Darien I suddenly feel someone grab my shoulder. Prepared to fight back I take the hand off my shoulder so that I could punch whoever was coming after me. Turning so that I am eye to eye with this man I find that it is Darien who is behind me. Hugging him I do my best to rush us both out of the bar so we could be safe.
We finally make it to the exit but it is to it is too late. The police had already showed up to break up the fight. It was the bartender that called them. They ran through the door causing it to break off its hinges. The door does not hit me because Darien grabs my shoulder pulling me towards the bathroom. It was from the doors of the bathroom we watch as the police handcuffed random citizens, Darien looks forward, causing me to worry about who might be in front of us.
Scared to find Gary in front of us I become bewildered to find God in front of me instead of Satan. Standing in front of me was a hero. The hero who had saved my life so many years before. He was the reason I was still alive today. Derek was the man standing in front of me like a Great God in his FBI uniform.
As my mind tries to find the words to speak, Darien found the proper words to say. In a nervous tone Darien says, “Hi Dad, what’s up?”
Turning my head to Darien in shock I start to see the family resemblance between the two of them. They both had the same type of facial features and expression; I can’t believe I didn't make the connection sooner. The first time I really met Derek I became mesmerized by his smile. The first time I spoke to Darien in English I, once again, became mesmerized by his identical smile. No wonder I always felt safe with Darien. I felt the same way when I was with his father. Now everything makes perfect sense.
Stuttering - since I am scared senseless - I look up at Derek saying, “Are we in trouble?”
Derek points to the door without saying a word causing me to think that trouble does not define what we did. Grabbing my hand Darien leads me to a Mercedes Benz that I had seen earlier at Darien’s house. As we slide into the car I nervously question Darien asking him, “What now?”
Shaking his head Darien looks down at me saying, “I don’t know but I can tell you it won’t be good.”
Darien runs his hands through his hair like he did when his mother embarrassed him. Darien was nervous and I think I should be too.
