Driving up to his house, Darien elbows me to remove my seat belt. When the seat belt was off my waist Darien grabs my hand rushing me inside the house. Questioning Darien, I hear Derek’s footsteps walking behind us slowly.
Upon entering the house I expected Darien’s mother to yell after us as we entered into the kitchen, like she did before we left the house, but nothing escaped her mouth. She stood at the breakfast bar leaning forward as she just looked up from her crime love story. Watching her carefully, Darien’s mother stares at us with glassy eyes that I had seen coming from people who were hiding a secret. She was trying to act like she knew nothing when truly Derek had called her on the car ride here explaining the whole dirty truth to her.
Derek enters into the kitchen and places his gun on the counter. Widening my eyes I watch as Derek paced back and forth until he stood up in front of us so he could stare us down. Derek’s husky voice speaks slowly saying, “So… I am wondering why my goodie two shoes son, who has never done anything bad… EVER! Would be at a bar speaking to a man who has raped the young women who is sitting next to him?”
Looking down, Darien keeps his eye lower than his father so that he does not look into Derek's eye as well as to respect his father by giving him more height which equals power in the eye of these two men.
"I needed to help my new friend"
Standing up I look Derek right in the eye and start to explain myself.
“It was not Darien’s fault. I convinced him to put the sleeping pills in Gary’s drink… Please don’t blame Darien. It is all my fault… I am sorry.”
Sitting back down, silence fills the room again causing me to think that Derek would not allow me to see Darien again. Of course, it is understandable as to why he would want to separate us but I was sure that without Darien in my life, I would go back to my former state. I would go back to walking the streets of this world alone until the day I die.
“No…” Darien’s voice cut through the silence causing me to jump out of my seat. Starring up I start to do my best to pull Darien down but he continued to stand up and talk with his father. “I should have suggested that we go and talk to you but… But I didn’t. I am sorry father.”
Adding to Darien’s words I say, “We are both sorry!”
Slamming both hands against the marble counter top gravity pushes both Darien and I back into our seats. Anger was all that could be seen radiating from Derek’s face but soon it crept into a smile causing me to become confused.
"Is this the girl you like?"
Darien freaks out when he hears his father comment. The stuttering continues on until Derek gestures Darien to become silent so he may continue his thought.“Calm down, I am just bugging you since I am not mad at you two… Anymore… I was pissed to find you didn't call the police, but we can’t change the past, so we need to move on.”
Not wanting to question Derek’s reasoning, both Darien and I nod our heads hoping he will forget everything we had done today.
After hearing the long speech, silence was the only thing that I wanted to hear. However, life is currently not in my favour. Darien’s mother had her voice cut through the silence like a knife on new skin.
Looking at us she states, “But don’t think you guys are getting off so easy.”
“Marina is right.” Derek said.
Thank God Derek allowed himself to continue explaining, “The Canadian government had brought up some FBI agents so that we can capture Gary. It is a very simple plan but it requires about all the Toronto police as well as half of the Virginia FBI… But the plan can’t be successful without one simple thing...”
Pointing at me, Derek makes his eyes soft so that I would hopefully go along with the plan. However, I do not agree with his plan. Shaking my head I stand up and scream, “No! NO!! I do not want to see him again!”
Everyone around me started talking telling me that it was the only way to lock him away, trying to convince me that I should go along with Derek’s plan. However, my mind did not allow the thought of me putting that criminal away to be the most important point of reasoning. My thoughts just raced around my mind about what if the plan failed. What if Gary had somehow captured me again? I would be forced to be his sex slave for the rest of my life. I could not let that happen again.
“Serena?” My mind had gone blank for the past couple of minutes, during the process of Derek trying to convince me to go with his plan I totally zoned out. . Turning my head so that I could view my surroundings, I find I am no longer in the kitchen. Sport teams graced the walls of Darien’s room, causing me to see that my worrisome nature made my mind go blank and brought me to what I guess was my only safe haven in this house.
Knocking on the door, I hear Darien’s voice creep through causing my body to shiver at every word he spoke. Resting my head on the door Darien asks, “Serena, open the door please.”
Being sarcastic I answer Darien with, “Why? So you can pressure me some more?”
“No…” Turning my body to the door I stand up pressing my ear close to it. “I need to change since I have Gary’s Bloody Mary all over my shirt.”
Embarrassment took over my body as I opened the door allowing Darien to enter. Walking around he grabs a shirt from his dresser and rush over to the bathroom. Leaving the door slightly open, I watch as Darien removes his tainted shirt and exchanges it for a clean one. When the door swings open I snap out of my trace and watch Darien closely with my eyes.
Darien sits on the bed and I follow his actions and sit as well. Darien looks deeply into my eyes and says, “So I am a bit confused.”
Resting my head back on the comforter of the bed I stare up at Darien giving him the signal that he can continue his thought. Looking down at me he explains, “Before you were all for getting Gary on that boat but now… “
Sitting up I bring my knees to my chest allowing my face to rest upon my knees as I speak. “But now… I am scared he will get me. He will take me away and I will be trapped in his arms for the rest of my life. He almost killed you… I can't...”
Having the tears flow down my face Darien grabs me in a hug. After crying on his shoulder for a minute or two Darien grabs my shoulders pulling me away from him so we may be eye to eye. Staring deeply into my eyes he answers, “I promise nothing will happen to you. Gary will not hurt you. As long as I have air in my lungs Gary will never hurt you. I will protect you until the end.”
With those words lingering in my mind, I laid down on the bed allowing Darien to run his fingers through my hair. I spent the night with Darien and waited for tomorrow. Tomorrow was the day I would come face to face with my abuser. Tomorrow I am going to make sure once and for all that his abusing days are over and next time he would not be able to hurt me. I will be strong so that Gary will never again have control over me.
