(I changed a few things about the animes to make the story work out)
(There's also some minor Mello x Near)
(By the way just a reminder that this has Tokyo Ghoul so expect violence)
(Sorry if I have wayyyy too much dialogue)

**Near's POV**
"Japan?" I asked while throwing darts at a target. My partner/friend (but mostly enemy), Mello, stood above me.
"Yeah. Japan. Lots of freaks like you there. Go." He ate a piece of his chocolate bar.
"Freaks? That's a little rude." I turned around to him after throwing the last dart.
"Well what else could I call you?! You only drink coffee all day! The only thing you eat is...is..."
I looked at the huge scar on his face that only I could explain. "I think 'ghoul' would be a better way of saying it." I responded. "So there are more in Japan than America, huh?"
"Yeah, groups of them everywhere. Getting...food... and stuff. You should leave and go there."
"I have nobody to fly on the plane with," I reasoned. A group of ghouls like me didn't sound interesting. I was fine the way my life was, solving mysteries and working with the government. Mello was the only one who knew I was a ghoul.
"You're 18! Do you really need someone to come with you?"
"Yes, I have never flown on a plane alone before."
"There's a first time for everything!" he responded, finishing his chocolate bar.
"I'm going to go get food," I said, trying to change the subject. I stood up and grabbed my mask, which was supposed to look like the world's greatest detective, L.
"Near- wait! At least consider-"
"Mello, you still need my help with mysteries.  And We're partners. Your attempts to get rid of me won't work. I don't even know what the government would say about it." I said, faced away from him at the door.
"Then...then...I'll come with you!" he yelled. "We can be partners in Japan!"
I turned around. "Don't you hate me? Didn't you try to kill me that one time?"
"I just... well, that was a year ago! People change." he argued.
I sighed. There wasn't much point in arguing further, I could just walk away...
"Fine. I'll come to Japan if you really insist. But we're telling the government we're leaving first."
"Ok," he said, running out the door, right past me. I watched as he ran down the hall. Maybe he didn't really hate me- he just wanted me to be with people like me.

**Two weeks later**
"Japan's just like I remember," I said, looking around the airport. I had gone to Japan a year ago, to solve the case of the murderer Kira. He ran away and we didn't see him again, but the murders stopped so we stopped searching. He was probably dead.
"Can you tell who's a ghoul or not?" Mello asked, looking around.
"Yeah, a little. There's one there, there, and...oh, there." I replied, pointing to the ones that didn't seem human.
"You should go meet them. Maybe they know a good way to get...food." Mello suggested. I knew Mello didn't like to talk about the fact that the only thing ghouls were able to eat were humans.
"Yeah, ok. You can get coffee maybe." Mello ran off, as I walked over to a ghoul that looked about seventeen. He had black hair and a white patch over his eye. He stared off in the distance, as if looking for someone.
"Hello," I greeted him. He looked over at me.
"Hi, who're you?" he asked in a friendly tone.
"My name is Near. You're a ghoul, right?" The boy looked shocked that I knew that.
"W-what?" He exclaimed, laughing slightly as some people looked at us. He grabbed my arm and pulled me away from where everyone else was.
"You can tell?" he whispered.
"If I didn't and I was a human, I would have run away to tell someone. You should think these things out more. Anyway, yes I can. I am a ghoul as well."
"Hmm...it might be because...nevermind." He smiled. "Anyway, my name's Kaneki."
"Who was that person you were looking for?" I asked.
"I wasn't looking for anyone..."
"Yes you were. I could see you looking around, as if searching for someone specific."
"Her name's Touka. She's a ghoul too. She said she was going to get coffee a while ago but I can't find her." explained Kaneki. I smiled, liking when I got something right. Then I frowned.
"She could be in danger. I hear investigators work even harder in Japan than where I'm from."
"Oh...uh...I probably should go find her then...but she probably can run away. She's fast." He began to leave.
"Are you two dating?" I asked. He stopped and laughed.
"Sort of. Not really." and he left.
"Hmm...a date would be nice..." I thought to myself, smiling at the reader of this fanfiction. (Sorry, I just had to xD)
Kaneki didn't notice, but I followed him. He went out the airport, back inside the airport, around the resturants, and finally came onto the roof. I'm not sure how I could keep up with him, since I didn't exercise much.
He froze at the entrance to the outdoor area on the roof, spotting people outside. He turned around and bumped into me.
"Investigators?" I guesssed.
"And Touka." he whispered. I looked out the window and saw five men in gray suits surrounding a girl wearing a rabbit mask. From what I could see, she had short blue hair and wore a green sweater. Two red flames came out of her back- a kagune. Every ghoul had a different design for their kagune.
"This is bad," Kaneki muttered. "She's surrounded, and there's nowhere for her to jump to!"
"Do you have your mask?" I asked. If ghouls were seen fighting without a mask, the police would know what they looked like and kill them, even when they were trying to look human.
"No...how about you?" he glanced over at my white backpack.
"Yeah," I pulled out my mask of L and put it on. It looked funny to some people, probably because of the strange eyes. I walked out to the humans. They noticed I was there.
"Whose this guy?!" one of them yelled.
"He isn't in our records!" another shouted back.
While they were distracted, Touka jumped off the roof. There was probably something to land on safely down there.
Meanwhile, the humans took out their weapons, called, quiniques, out of their silver suitcases. They all had completely random designs, like kagunes, and they all could kill a ghoul.
I revealed my own kagune. It was neon blue and pixelated, in the shape of butterfly wings for no reason at all. Rainbow sparks shot out of it occasionally.
"Let's just kill this guy so we don't have to worry about him-he looks kind of strong." said a younger investigator, with black hair that went slightly above his chin.
"Matsuda! Saying he looks strong is basically complimenting him!" yelled another, much older than the one named Matsuda.
I honestly didn't want to fight. I hated being a ghoul, having to be enemies with humans. It felt like I was the murderer Kira myself, though he only killed criminals.
But I had no choice. They would kill me, and I was hungry anyway. I spread my blue wings and used them to slap three of them to the edge of the roof, even though there was a short wall that didn't let them get pushed off. A crystal dart flew past me but I managed to dodge, hitting the one who tried to get me with my kagune. The younger one, Matsuda, managed to run away and get down the elevator.
The battle ended easily and quickly. Everyone lay dead around the roof. Kaneki ran out from where he hid and stared at me as I took off my mask. The kagune vanished.
"How can you kill all of them on your own?! Touka can't even do that!" he exclaimed. I smiled.
"I don't know, I practice sometimes, you know, for self defence." I shrugged, then looked around at the dead bodies. "Should we eat them...?"
"Um...I guess...they're already dead so..." said Kaneki awkwardly.
Then violent things happened which the author doesn't want to write about because she doesn't like writing violent things because the people she knows in real life may judge her.
**While that's happening**
I could hear footsteps behind me while I was eating. Turning quickly around, I saw it was Mello. He had only known I was a ghoul for a month, and had never actually seen me eating. His eyes widened as he saw me covered in blood stains.
"Mello-" I tried comforting him but he ran to the edge of the roof and threw up, possibly onto someone below him.
Kaneki looked over. "Your friend?"
I nodded. Mello faced away from us.
"His name is Mello. He's...sort of...okay with ghouls."
"Hello Mello! My name is Kaneki," Kaneki yelled over to Mello, trying to be cheerful."

**Meanwhile**
**???'s POV**
"Ghouls? What are those?" he asked, turning in his chair.
"We just found out about them. I hear they eat people or just kill them for fun."
"Hmm...they'll cause trouble. It'll mess up the world."
His friend stood silent.
"Could I kill them?" asked the boy.
"Yeah, we started killing them a few days ago."
"Any way to tell if they're ghouls?"
"Nope! The only people that know are the ones that died already."
"Could your eyes work for it?"
"Yeah, but I told you, I'm just a spectator. I can't help."
"Hm. I'll ask Misa." He looked up data on ghouls on his phone. "Great, this time the police are on my side!"
