**Mello's POV**
That was...disturbing
After they finished, I walked with Near and Kaneki, keeping my distance. To be honest, ghouls terrified me. And I wasn't usually scared. I wanted to be friends with Near though, but it was only a year ago I had pointed a gun at his head.
After following Kaneki for five minutes in the city, I noticed he didn't say where we were going.
"Hey, where're you taking us?" I asked, loud enough to be heard over the busy street.
"The place I work," explained Kaneki. "It's a coffee shop. It's called Anteiku."
"So your taking us to your job?" asked Near, obviously as confused as I was.
"It's a place for ghouls to stay. Mello, you're welcome too." he smiled. Well one thing was clear- I didn't trust him at all. Why would anyone sane walk into a coffee shop full of man-eating monsters?
But, I don't know why, I walked in.
A man with light brown hair at the counter. A little girl with lighter brown hair with her mom in seats. A blue-haired girl serving coffee. An old man making coffee. Nothing was very unusual. It was a regular coffee shop.
"They're all ghouls," whispered Near. "If you want to leave, we can, but you're the one who suggested to come to Japan."
"Ha! I'm not scared. You ghouls are just another group of freaks, that's all."
Near sighed. "What if I did this?" He pretended to bite my shoulder. I jumped away.
"Wow. Well, ok, if you want to stay, we'll stay." Near told me. Kaneki grabbed two cups of coffee and held them up to us. "Want some?"
"Uh sure," I took a cup as Near took his silently.
"I don't get why coffee out of all things is the only think ghouls can drink." I said randomly.
"Yeah, I don't know. I don't think anyone knows, really." Kaneki replied, pouring himself a cup as well.
Right then, a man walked in, along with a teenage boy with white hair and red hair clips. He wore a white shirt with blue suspenders, black pants, and for some reason there were red stitches on his arms, legs, neck, and face.
"Wow, Matsuda, this shop looks nice!" exclaimed the boy, who sat down at a table near the entrance.
"Doves," Kaneki whispered to Near, loud enough so I could hear.
"Doves? Is that a code word?" I whispered back.
"Yeah, it's what we call investigators. You're not a ghoul but still- act casual, okay?" I nodded.
"Do you know them?" I wondered.
"I've met the white-haired guy, Suzuya Juuzuo. He's hard to forget. And the guy Matsuda, he just escaped from when Near was fighting." I turned to the "doves" along with Near and Kaneki to hear what they were saying.
"You found a new ghoul?" Awesome!" exclaimed Suzuya. "I can't wait to kill him!" Kaneki and I glanced over at Near.
"Yeah, he reminds me of someone I met before but I can't really remember. Probably when I wasn't fighting ghouls."
"The only other big thing you did was the Kira case, right?" Suzuya grabbed the coffee that the blue-haired girl served.
"Mhmm! That was fun. Except for when we found out who Kira was."
Near turned to me and said "He doesn't even recognize me from when I told them all who Kira was."
"You're speaking too soon," I replied, leaning against the counter and accidentally spilling over a cup of coffee. Ignoring it, I went on. "He'll notice you." Right when I said that, Matsuda looked over and got up.
"Hey, aren't you that kid, Near?" he asked, smiling. Suzuya began staring blankly into space.
"Yes. I suppose you were in the Kira case, Mr. Matsuda?"
He looked shocked. "How did you know my name?"
Near sighed. "There's a name tag on your shirt..."
Suzuya got up, noticing Near. He stared at him.
"Um...hello," Near greeted awkwardly.
"Hello! I'm Suzuya Juuzuo! I like your hair!" He exclaimed, happy to not be the only person with white hair.
"Great..." Near walked away to wear Kaneki was. I followed him. Even if they were the only humans there, I didn't want to say anything. I usually acted without thinking it through too much, so I could say something to reveal that every single worker here, plus Near, was a ghoul.
A man, about 20, with light brown hair and a brown suit walked in. Near was drinking coffee, but the moment he saw the man he almost spit it out in shock.
"Is that..." he said quietly. "Is that who I think it is?"
"No..." I shook my head. "Not possible. Not possible at all."
Light Yagami. College student. Very Popular. That was how most people knew him.
But he wasn't who they thought he was.
He was a murderer. He called himself "justice" just because he only killed criminals. A black notebook was in his hand. The Death Note. A year ago, we had confirmed that he was Kira. He should have died.
"Well, I suppose we never confirmed his death..." Near whispered as he sat at the table next to us.
He turned to the waitress to order, but noticed we were behind her. He paused for a moment, then continued ordering.
Kaneki noticed our surprised faces. "Um...what are you looking at?"
"The guy next to us," I whispered. "is Kira."
"Kira? The murderer guy? It said he died on the news!"
"He should have. But we just assumed he did." explained Near.
His girlfriend Misa walked into the shop and sat down in front of him. She was known by the police as Second Kira, since she had a Death Note too, but she could see everyone's names above their heads.
"Hiii Light!" she exclaimed. We listened without making it to obvious we were listening.
"Hi. Do you see any of them?" he asked.
"Huh? You mean ghouls? Well, some names I see now are in blue instead of red, but I don't know why..."
"Are there any blue names here?"
"Yeah, a lot of them." she looked around and began to point at each of the workers. "There, there, there..."
"She can tell who is a ghoul!" Near exclaimed.
"Should we hide?" I asked. "Light will recognize you from before, and he'll kill you first since you'll go after him again!"
We stood up, trying to make it look casual, and walked to the bathroom. Instead of actually going inside, we stood in the hall. Kaneki followed us.
"She knows who's a ghoul?" he exclaimed.
"And she can see all our names. We could all be written in the Death Note!" I whispered.
I could hear Misa getting up, probably to use the bathroom.
"Get in the closet!" said Kaneki, opening a storage closet that only Near could fit inside. He walked in, knowing there was no time to complain.
Misa opened the door to the bathroom, and noticed me and Kaneki together.
"A ghoul and a human together...?" she muttered. "Ok..." and walked inside.
We opened the closet, and Near walked out casually. As soon as he did, Light got up and walked over to us.
"I don't mean to invade in anything you're doing, but why was he in the closet?" he asked. He acted as if we weren't the ones to find out he was Kira, and he had met us in person.
"Heh...it's just a game we play...called 'Let's hide this person in the closet'..." replied Kaneki, very nervously.
"You...hide people in closets?"
"Um, yeah," he said more confidently. But it was still terrible acting. "Wanna play it?"
"Um no, I-" Kaneki pushed him into the closet and locked the door.
"Hey! Let me out!" he yelled.
"Count backwards from 1000 by 7, and when you reach 0 I'll let you out!" Kaneki laughed.
Light sighed, and Misa walked out of the bathroom.
"Did you see where Light-kun went?" she asked us.
"He went to the bathroom," I lied.
"Oh, um, ok!" she accepted, and went to her table.
"Why did you put him in the closet?" I asked.
"So Misa can't tell him anyone's names." Kaneki responded.
"Misa!" he started yelling. "Misa! They locked me in the closet!" She looked over to where we are and was clearly confused.
"Light-kun?" she asked, walking over. He began to bang on the door.
"Did you lock Light-kun in the closet?!" she exclaimed. "I bet you're planning on killing him like all you ghouls do!" She obviously didn't recognize me or Near, since we had never actually shown our faces to her.
"Misa! What are the names of the ghouls!" he shouted.
"Hmm..." she looked above Near's head, then Kaneki's. "...Kaneki Ken and Nate River."
"Nate River?" he asked. "Is that the white haired boy's name?" He obviously recognized Near. If we didn't take the Death Note from his bag, which was on his table, Near would die.
"Is there a human?" he asked, but got no response. Kaneki was covering her mouth.
"Touka!" Kaneki yelled, and the blue haired waitress walked over to see what was going on.
"She can tell who's a ghoul!" he told her.
"Is that Misa-Misa the actress?" exclaimed Touka.
"Yes," said Near casually. "I guess we should kill her."
Misa panicked, trying to break free.
"Well she didn't do anything wrong..." Touka tried to reason.
"She's the Second Kira they were talking about, so she deserves the death penalty anyway." I reasoned, and held up the gun I carried around for protection. Misa panicked more.
"Wait! What's happening!" yelled Light. Touka ran to let him out, unaware he would hurt them. He stared at Near with hatred. "Nate River, hm?" He quickly took out a small piece of paper and a pen. A page of the Death Note.
Near couldn't fight since he didn't have his mask, and Kaneki was holding Misa. I decided the best thing to do was to not kill Misa for now and get Light.
"Mello! Don't kill him just yet," said Near. "We could use him to find out about the Death Note."
And that's where the author realized this chapter was way too long, so she cut it off right here to leave readers in mid-conversation suspense because she is that bad a writer.
