Opening my water bottle, I proceeded to drown about a quarter of it, as my eyes flickered over to the director through the glass.
And there he was, in all of his glory.
Haru Sato, one of the most famous directors for anime in the whole entire industry. Considered one of the anime industries gods, because if he was on board for your anime, it was most likely to be successful. He was a good luck charm everywhere he went . . . only if he liked you of course. Either way though, it was a dream come true to be even performing in front of him.
How he had found me, was beyond me. Considering what I was able to pick up from the peanut gallery sitting in front of me was that he had accidentally walked into the wrong recording studio, which I had happened to be performing in. (The only thing that bothers me about that, is that I perform mainly at ungodly times, like 11 at night, while I spend my afternoon after school hours completing homework, studying, and pretending to be an intern here.) Sato was immediately hooked by my style, which was a compliment beyond words.
In the end, he wanted to let me try voice acting for a new character in one of his newer animes that they wanted to see if the fans would like them or not. Also known as if the voice actor will have a one time job or a reoccuring part.
Now why would they insert a new voice actor, especially one whose origins were of America and Korea, and was brand new to this world?
Simple.
The original voice actor was out sick and they were already behind schedule for the voices, plus anything they had recorded before had been corrupted. So, they needed the voices today. Hence, they brought in one of the only voice actors that could be called in like this without a contract: me.
Add that with Sato's interest in me into the mix and everything was dandy and good.
Even thought people were having doubts, made obvious by faces I could clearly see.
Assholes.
My attention was dragged back to reality by the tech team with a wave. Giving an all clear signal, I nodded and tugged a little on the headphones, a nervous habit I had recently picked up. While, over time, it was hazardous to the equipment, it gave me a sense of being grounded; something I needed whenever I was nervous.
Leaning forward, careful of how fast and deliberately I moved to eliminate the sounds of movement from the recordings, I started to go over a quick review of my character to see if I was missing any little cute facts, only half listening to the pre-recorded voices playing in the headphones.
My character was a brighter girl, personality wise, but a little on the dumb side. Nevertheless, she was someone who garnered attention and loved everyone. Her name was Aiko, no last name as far as I knew. A classic character in my opinion. It seemed that every anime had this type of character to balance things out, especially in drama filled ones. The chick was coming back to the town for vacation.
Tuning back in, I realized my part was coming up and sent a quick glance over to the tech men, the duo whom I had been working with from the start, giving nervous smiles. Pft. If anyone should be nervous, it should be me. Closing my eyes, I counted to three, letting go of reality and setting myself down in a fictitious world of this particular anime.
On three, my eyes opened, not focused, but glassy, showing that I was currently gone. I could still read the words in front of me when needed to but was blocking out literally everything else.
"Oh my gosh, Hayato?! Is that you?" I could feel my cheeks stretch, a warm feeling bubbling through my body. "You've grown so much - oh! Is this your girlfriend? Idiot, why didn't you keep in contact?! I would've gotten you both gifts!"
As for how long this continued, I have no idea, since I had soon lost the ability to understand the passing of time when acting, but the tech stopped me after a bit and told me to run it through again. But, of course, being the proud teenager I was, I took a peek at the assholes watching.
I would've smirked if I had the time.
.&.
"You did great today."
My hand paused above the handle, as I looked over at Akio in the front seat. An exhausted smile stretched my cheeks as I felt a little spark ignite in me. Maybe I could survive the day. "Thanks dude. See ya later."
Right before I could shove open the door, Akio prompted a very innocent question.
"You want me to bring some American fast food?"
My whole entire body froze, and my head slowly rotated back towards him. Eyes lit, I nodded enthusiastically, exhaustion forgotten at least for the moment. The young adult flashed his killer smile and I hopped out of the car, the crunch of snow under my boots loud and familiar. Slamming the door shut, he took off, slow of course, and I turned around to face the gates of hell that stood about fifteen feet before me. At any other time, I would have a feeling of impending doom, but right about now, I was pretty satisfied.
You couldn't blame my excitement really. I haven't had America food, let alone fast food in the last couple of weeks, regardless of the quantity of Burger Kings and McDonald's there were. Kai had been pretty adamant that I was to avoid that food due to keeping my health up and stuff, so it's just been a mix of Japanese and Korea food, with the rare French and Chinese outings. Don't get me wrong, I do love the stuff, but when it's repetitive every single day like that for an American girl who loves to try new things to eat all the time . . . it's crappy.
Upon reaching the gate, I realized that they had closed it for school hours. But of course, since this is a rich kid school where people left and came all the time, there was no lock. Shaking my head, I shoved it open and squeezed through the opening. With that completed, I sauntered down into the courtyard which was empty for once. Then again, these rich kids were actually people that stayed in class . . . for the most part anyways.
But it just felt so weird seeing a place that was usually full of sassy chatting teenagers whenever you saw it, completely empty. Not a single soul to be found and it was dead silent.
A pang of emptiness hit my stomach and I felt exhausted again. A yawn crept to my lips, escaping before I could catch it. Regret, times ten, smacked me in the face as the icy air clawed down my throat.
A sneeze burst out the next moment and that's when it hit me that I should probably get to class. Didn't want to get sick of all days, of course. Plus, I only had two more hours of school left and I was home-free. Or rather, I should say, apartment-free.
. . . right?
