My Story

I am woken by a light shove in my foot, the warmth of whoever prodded me spreads to my whole body. My eyes snap open and dart around, I am confused about my surroundings. The creaky, blood-stained bed and a pungent smell of medicine and herbs overwhelm me. Until my brain revisits yesterdays events, that's when I remember him. Thomas. The vine boy.

I slowly sit up to find out who actually woke me and see the blonde boy from yesterday perched at the end of my bed. A terrible pain shoots up my arm and I flinch.

"Don't worry, the pain should go away in a minute," He speaks

I am surprised by the softness of his voice compared to his harsh shouting from the previous day.  And he is right, after a couple of minutes of pure silence, the pain starts to gradually fade away.

"What is this place?" I ask him in a whisper

"I'll tell you after you answer some of my questions," He answers

"Wait," I pause "what is your name?"

"Newt."

He smiles when he replies as if he is proud to remember his name.

"Okay then, shoot your questions at me,"

He nods and begins to questions me,

"What is your name?" He asks

"Amelia,"

"How did you get into the maze?"

Newt looks up at me from what I think is some kind of diary or notebook and listens eagerly.

"Well... About 1 year ago I woke up confused already inside the maze, I wondered around and found a small red parachute that had a box attached to it. Inside were supplies. Food, water, clothes and small weapons," I take a deep breath and continue "At night, the grievers came out and tried to attack me but I defeated them all, I don't know how it was just an instinct. I felt like it was programmed into me or something. So in the day, I would run around the maze collecting parachutes and at night I would hide up high in a hole that had been engraved into some walls. Some times I wouldn't find any parachutes at all and would starve."

"Oh," He reply's "how come none of the runners saw you?"

"I hid from them, I didn't know who they were and spied on them. I learnt alot of tactics and skills by staying quiet and watching them."

"Wow, that's amazing, we should train them better so the can spot things quicker," Newt said chuckled

"Is that all? Cuz I really want to get out of this bed," I exclaim

He puts his arms up to surrender,

"Sure, sure whatever,"

He hands me a small pile of clothes and shows me to a changing room. I change, wash my face and hands and quickly brush through my hair with my fingers. It somehow still feels clean and smooth, I shrug and shuffle back to the room. Newt leads me outside and gives me a tour,

"The box is positioned in the middle of the glade, over there are the animals and the blood house. Where we slaughter them," he says pointing in the direction of a wooden building with two large doors,

He then shows me the homestead, gardens and the deadheads. Newt then goes on explaining the walls and how they work, even though I already know most of the things he tells me about the maze I pretend to listen. We end the short 'tour' in-front of the south door.

"Rule number one is to never go out there, unless your a runner, of course," He explains

Pointing at the cold, lifeless corridors of the maze,

"And from what I've heard, you will probably be a runner, but for today your gonna help with the wood cuttin'" he says gesturing to an and a pile of large chunks of wood.

"But first," he puts up his finger "lets go and eat!"
