CHAPTER TWO

PEOPLE SCREAM DUE to many reasons. More often than not, however, it is due to a state of panic or shock. No matter if it is for the thrill of an amusement park – a scream of happiness and delight – or a scream of rage and fear, it is still something rather unpleasant to listen to. Screams are ear-piercing sounds that rumble the ground beneath our feet, destroying the calm and peaceful ideal scenario from before. When it is one with power, it might even be enough to cause cracks in a piece of glass or cause ears to bleed.

Before I had the misfortune to move here to California, all my screams had been the result of thrilling amusement park rides. It had never been anything but screams of pure happiness and bliss, a sort of excitement that rushed through a person's veins. Never was it a scream of fear, even when aboard the fastest roller coaster offered by the theme park I was visiting.

This scream would be the first real fear-filled scream that I had ever let out since childhood and I pitied the receiver for having to be a victim of it.

I watched as the stranger's eyes widened with horror, visible dread and panic filling every fiber of his body as he rushed forward and hastily placed the bowl of soup he was holding in his hands onto the bedside table before clamping his hands right over my mouth in an attempt to muffle my voice.

"Shut it," he hissed, a knee rested on the bed to get a better grip. Though his voice was silky smooth and alluring, it was what made him even more dangerous than he already was. Fearing for my safety, I reluctantly obeyed and stopped screaming, reduced to only making small squeaking noises due to the pain that the straining of my voice had caused my injuries.

Once he noticed that I had quietened down, the mysterious man released his hands, dropping them to his sides as he dropped to the bed with a sigh. He took a deep breath through his nose before letting it out, whistling lightly as the air rushed past his teeth. Needless to say, he was trying to calm himself down.

"Who are you?" I squeaked out, voice shaking tremendously. When his striking blue eyes flitted over to examine my face and bandaged torso, I couldn't help but instinctively shuffle away from him due to our close proximity. He did not reply, eyes satisfied with roaming wordlessly around my physique which caused me to squirm in my spot. Never had I ever been so uncomfortable and I had to pull the blanket higher up my body to cover myself from his gaze.

He licked his lips, almost as if it was an action he didn't even know he was doing, before glancing around the room. It was then had I noticed that my clothes from yesterday were neatly folded in a corner of the room, and on top of it sat my bag which hopefully still held my belongings inside.
