“Good afternoon, how may I help you?” The platinum haired woman asked.
“Oh, just looking.” I dismissed the woman, albeit distractedly, my fingers running lightly over the display cases.
From the corner of my eye I could see she hadn’t moved, so I raised my head to watch her. She was dressed smartly in a tailored suit, her mouth stretched into an insincere smile.
“Can I show you anything? Are you looking for anything in particular?”
“Oh no, not-“ I broke off with a surprised gasp. “What is this?”
I hurried to the end of the room, my heels clicking in the shining floor. There, in a raised display, laid my prize. The saleswoman rushed after me, standing over the diamond necklace almost protectively.
“I’m sorry, this piece isn’t available right now.”
“Oh. Why not?”
Another saleswoman, this time a brunette, had noticed us crowding over the display and she walked towards us.
“You must by Mrs. Hamilton! It´s a pleasure to finally meet you.” She motioned to the display. “As you can see, the necklace is well taken cared of, and will be delivered to your house tomorrow morning.”
“Clara! This is not Mrs. Hamilton.” The first saleswoman said.
“What? Oh, oh. I´m really sorry.” She told me, her hands twisting together in distress. “I was just thinking how well you look for someone your age.”
I smiled, trying to reassure her. A line of possibilities formed in my head. This would be easier than I thought.
“Don't worry about it. I could only wish I had the opportunity to own this incredible piece. If you don't mind me asking, who is this lucky woman that bought this piece? This… Mrs. Hamilton?”
“I´m sorry.” The blonde said her face steely. “Costumer confidentiality.”
I pouted, disappointed. “Oh, very well.” I glanced at my watch. “Oh! I should be going. I´ll come back another day and keep looking around. This is a lovely shop. Thank you!” I directed the last part to the friendlier saleswoman.
Walking out the jewelry store, I began the short trek to the coffee shop where Reach and Cam waited for me. At least, the walk should have felt short if it weren't for the damn heels Cam had forced me to wear. The only reason I had obeyed was that heels were needed to look the part of the wealthy woman looking to spend some- if a few thousand dollars could still be called some- money. I couldn't very well use tennis shoes with a dress and walk into an expensive jewelry shop, could I?
Walking into the coffee shop and spotting all the pairs of jeans and running pants I felt more than overdressed. Trying to avoid calling attention to myself, I walked to the table where Cam and Reach waited, and took a sit from where I could discreetly watch the door.
“Your coffee.” Cam pushed the still hot cup of coffee my way. “So, what's the verdict, oh fearless leader?”
I took a sip of coffee. “We´re not breaking in into the shop.”
Cam scowled. “What? You said-“
I half smiled at Cam. “Let me finish. Some woman is expecting the necklace tomorrow in her house.” If there was one thing easier than stealing candy from a baby is breaking into a house. “It’s going to be ten times easier to steal it from there. What do you think?”
“Do you know who this woman is?” Reach asked, his fingers nimbly making his empty cup spin in the table.
“Her name is Mrs. Hamilton.”
