Lee County High was a small high school for the teens of Leesburg. Caroline, a seventeen-year-old girl, was heading to her English class. It was her first class of the year and she was super excited for it. She walked into the quiet, semi-empty room. Books littered the shelves, work from older students were scattered across the walls. Posters about simile, hyperbole, personification, imagery, and even the simple metaphor were on the upper edge of the walls just barely touching the ceiling.
Caroline took her seat at a empty table and watched as students poured in from the hall and into their seats. Caroline ended up sitting alone and was quite happy about that. The bell rang, signalling the class to start.
Ms. Boycot, the teacher, started handing out papers to each student. The papers were for a partner project. Each pair of students were to take a literary device and find a poem or song that used them. They were also to define the device and present it to the class.
"Alright, class, each of you will need to partner up with the person next to you."
Caroline raised her hand. "Ms. Boycot, I don't have a partner."
The teacher turned to her and shook her head. "Let me check the attendance, I should have an even amount of students," Ms. Boycot looked over her sheet as a boy walked in.
Caroline snapped her head in his direction and groaned as he sat next to her. "What are you doing here, Bryan?"
The boy chuckled. "I could ask you the same thing, Boyer."
The teacher looked up at the two teens. "Oh, well, Caroline, Thomas can be you partner."
"Excuse me?!" Caroline inquired. "There is no way I'm working with this devil!"
"Please be kind to the other students, and no, you don't have a choice. Neither of you do. I suggest you get started."
Thomas leaned over Caroline's shoulder. "Oh, I have the perfect song for alliteration," he smiled cheekily.
"Forget it," Caroline muttered.
"It's called 'Kick the Dust Up'," he grinned.
"I said no, Bryan," Caroline sneered.
Thomas rolled his eyes. "Quit calling me that. You know I go by Luke or Thomas."
Caroline stood up. "I don't care what you call me or what I call you. I want to get this assignment done!"
Luke frowned. "What do you have against me?"
Caroline sighed. He always went to the bar, Caroline knew he was always partying with his friends. She then stood there. Even if Luke was cute, she wasn't gonna pretend he was any different than he actually was. "I'll call you 'Bryan' if I feel like it, and that's for me to know and you to find out!"
Luke sighed. "Fine, alright." He had a crush Caroline and had been crushing on her since they were freshmen. Luke wasn't gonna tell her that of course. He sat back and watched as Caroline worked. She wouldn't even let him help. Luke didn't understand why she hated him.
He couldn't think of anything that was so terrible, that she hated it. Luke sighed. Maybe it was for the better. He looked around at the other girls around him, but he didn't find them nearly as pretty as he found Caroline.
Luke watched Caroline's blue eyes dart from word to word as she read. He liked the way she flicked her beautiful blonde hair. He had fallen for the girl that hated him. If he could find a way to change her mind, he would do it in a snap of the finger.
He suddenly laid his hand on top of Caroline's without thinking. Immediately, she stood up. "Don't touch me! Don't you ever touch me! You are a lousy human and I don't want to associate with you ever again. I don't know what you were planning, but don't ever touch me."
