Twenty Years Later

"Mummy! Mummy wake up!" I feel a heavy lump bounce up and down on me. I groan with displeasure and open my eyes.
The first thing I'm greeted with is a huge grin. A beautiful girl jumping up and down on me. Her dark hair is a mess around her face, but she's laughing. This makes me smile, I love hearing her laugh.
"Mummy! Come on its Christmas! Daddy come on!" My daughter, Samantha, cheers happily. It's her first proper Christmas, she's four. The Christmas's before she received gifts and toys, but it's only this year that she understands the concept of Santa. And jingle bells. And trees. And most definitely Rudolf.
Arthur rolls over, groaning and burying his head under his pillow. Samantha frowns, watching her dad with disappointment. I sigh and stop myself from giving him a bollocking, I stand up and wrap my silk dressing gown around my dainty body and pick Samantha up.
She hugs my neck, the smile back on her face. I turn on the Christmas lights and proceed down the stairs. She gasps with excitement when she sees the living room. There are various boxers, in all shapes, sizes and colours scattered around the room.
I put her down onto the floor. Sam cautiously looks up at me, as if she's asking permission to open her gifts. I encouragingly nod, smiling and getting Arthur's camera from the cabinet.
I'm able to snap many photos of amazement as Samantha opens all of her gifts. She smiles and shows me various gifts, as if I hadn't brought them myself, but I'm not going to spoil her fun.
Arthur trudges down the stairs, his head hanging low. He's thrown a random t shirt on and pulled on some boxers. This is what he normally walks around in.
"Daddy look! It's Rudolf!" Samantha happily picks up the soft cuddly toy reindeer that we'd brought her, she toddles over to her father and lifts it up so that he can see.
He simply nods and continues into the kitchen. Both Samantha and I frown. I leave her to finish opening her presents from relatives and go into the kitchen.
I don't talk to my husband; I know better than to talk to him so early on a morning. I prepare the food for tonight. My father, Arthur's sister, her friend, Arthur, Samantha and I. That's five people.
I sigh and begin slow cooking the turkey. I chop up various vegetables and other things.
Arthur reads the newspaper. The cover has something to do with EMINEM, his second divorce with Kim. I sigh in sympathy as Arthur mutters profanities about my childhood friend.
"Mummy." I feel a small tug on my dressing gown, I smile and turn around. Samantha looks up at me with her big eyes.
Tucking a curl behind my ear, I kneel down in front of her, smiling, "Yes baby?"
"I got you a Christmas present." She smiles sheepishly.
My heart swells.
"You didn't have to honey, just your smile this morning was enough." I smile.
"Santa forgot to pick it up." She continues. She fiddles with something in her hand. "Close your eyes mummy."
I do as I'm told and close my eyes. Samantha reaches around my neck and fiddles with something. I hear a small click and open my eyes. I look down at the gold chain around my neck, there's a circle pendent on it.
I smile at its beautifulness and wrap my arms around my daughter. I hug her close and kiss all over her face.
Various hours later, I sit at my dresser. Applying my makeup over my face. I add thick eyeliner and dark eyeliner. I finally add a layer of clear lip gloss over my lips, then pull my dress on. The dress falls to my knees, it's a pretty shade of pink, a few floral patterns oddly placed over the skirt. I let my curls fall loose around my shoulders and pull on some heels. Ever since I married Arthur, instead of wearing my Detroit slacks I wear the most girly clothes I can.
I walk downstairs and greet our various guests. I take their compliments and enter the kitchen to finish cooking. My father comes in and helps for a while, he asks how my marriage is. And I tell him the brutal truth.
During lunch, I mainly stay silent, but I listen. I listen to the snarky comment Arthur makes, I listen to the subtle flirts that pass through him and his sister's friend. I ignore them. I don't care.
My father is sleeping the night. It's his first Christmas alone, due to my mother's passing only last year. I finish cleaning the kitchen then go back into the living room. I'm just about to sit down when I hear a knock on the door.
I sigh and pick up my sister in laws purse, "She probably forgot this." I walk to the door and open it, expecting to see Arthur's teenage sister.
Instead, I see a hoodie figure. The man takes his hood down, pulling off his cap and bandana with it. I see bleached blonde hair, pale blue eyes, a chiselled jaw, and a slender body. There's only one man I know who can look good in such baggy clothes.
"Marshall?" My voice catches on the lump in my throat.
"Please." He mumbles quietly, meeting my eyes with an uneasy, weak gaze. "I didn't know where else to go."
My heart stops. It's been twenty years since I've seen my childhood friend and sweetheart. The last time I'd seen him had been my wedding day. The last time. Our last time.
My wedding day had been the last time I'd tasted his lips on my own. The touch of his skin. The comfort of his arms. Him.
I don't reply at first, I just wrap my arms around his neck and pull him inside. He's freezing cold. "I'm glad you did." I say.
