Chapter five: Excuse me…WHAT?!
~Bri~
“…I’ll just look on the Brightside, I’m roughly six feet tall.” I finished the song. Laughing on the inside because I’m nowhere near six feet.
Q-tip stopped his strings and smiled at me. “Beautiful.”
I smiled. “Yeah. The song really is.”
“I was talking about your voice.” he said, looking down shaking his bangs.
I nodded. “So, I have a question.”
He looked up and smiled. “I have an answer.”
“Well,” I stood up. “let me ask this question, so that I can get that answer of yours.”
He shook his head, smiling. “So now you have sarcastic ass comments, huh?”
“What can I say?” I shrugged. “You’re rubbing off on me.”
He rolled his eyes and smiled. And I can’t lie, that was the most adorable thing I have ever seen in my whole life. Before I realized, a small “Awh” escaped my lips before I could catch it.
“I was waiting for that.” he chuckled. “The question?”
“Oh…right.” I blinked. “Why me?”
He frowned. “Why you…?”
I sighed and sat on the coffee table in front of him. “Why did you decide to sing with me instead of Julz? She’s the other singer in Midnight Bella, and she’s like in love with you. So why not her?”
“I knew you’d ask that.” he smiled and leaned forward. “This is gonna sound weird but, when I heard you sing for the first time…It was like your voice was singing to me.”
I raised my eyebrows. “My voice…was singing…to you?”
He nodded, smiling, of course. This kid is always smiling. And biting his fucking lip! Always!
I stared at him in awe for like ten seconds. “Uhm…Don’t take this the wrong way but…are you on drugs?”
He starting laughing so hard he had to hold his stomach.
“I’m dead serious, Christofer.”
“I know.” he said after he could breathe again. “And no. I’m not.”

*The Next Night*
--------------------------
Hmm. I really wonder why he let’s me call him Q-tip. He says it annoys him, but I think he secretly likes it.
I was laying in the bed, reading over some of Q-tips lyrics, which, some of them are actually pretty good. But, seriously. How the hell does he think I’m going to sing his songs? Every single one is about a girl. Okay…there IS one I like. Brightside. I do like that one, I can’t lie.
“Bri!” my Mom yelled up the steps. “Alex is here!”
“Alright! I’m coming!” I dropped the lyric pad and ran down the steps.
When I got there, I saw Alex standing at the door with his guitar case in one hand, his drum sticks and a blue shirt in the other, a suitcase at his feet and a backpack slung over his shoulder.
Alex and I just started at each other awkwardly for a minute while I took in what I was seeing.
“Mom?” I whispered, walking down the remaining two steps. “Can you give us a second?”
She just looked back and fourth between us. She always thought there was something more than friendship with me and Al. I always told her she was crazy.
She nodded. “Sure, honey. I’ll be upstairs.”
We waited until we heard her door close before saying anything.
He set down his guitar case and his backpack. “I can explain.”
“Well,” I pointed to his bags. “Doesn’t really look like you need to.”
“I--”
“Why, Al? Huh? Why are you leaving?” I said feeling the tears about to pour out of my eyes.
“Bri,” he sighed and pushed his brown hair out of his eyes. “I’ve told you before, we all have. People get stuck in this town.”
“So where ya’ going? Hm?” I put my hands on my hips.
He looked down. “Chasing Starz got a record deal…four weeks ago. We’re going on tour.”
“Well son of a bitch, Alex.” I laughed bitterly as I felt a tear run down my cheek. “Four fucking years, Alex.” I whipped away that stupid tear. “You’ve been with Chasing Starz for two months!”
I mean really. I’m hurt. I’ve known Alex since the diaper days. When we turned 13, we started On The Wings of Merlin. It started with an acoustic guitar -that Alex just happened to be holding- and me singing. Then Jake joined. Then Zack. And that’s how we started. Me and Alex always dreamed of being rock stars. Always together. Forever.
“I know.” he walked over with his arms open.
I held my hand up. “Don’t.” I walked past him, into the living room.
“Bri.” he followed. “You know this is killing me. That’s why I couldn’t tell you until now.”
I turned to him, arms crossed. “So you wait until the night you’re leaving to tell me?”
“I’m sorry, Bri. I am.” he sighed. “But going on tour has always been my dream. You know that.”
“No, Alex.” I shook my head, tears streaming down my face. “It’s always been OUR dream.”
He sighed. “This town is drowning my dreams, Bri. I’m not going down like this. I gotta get out of this town tonight, or it’ll be my downfall.”
“What are we supposed to do without you, Al?” I choked out.
“Same thing you’ve been doing.” a loud honk from out side let us both know his tour bus was here.
He walked over to his stuff and picked up his drum sticks and the shirt. “Keep these until I get back.” he handed the stuff to me and whipped away a tear from my cheek. “Bri, you gotta get out of here too. When the times right, leave. Or it’ll be your downfall as well.”
I nodded. “I know.” I walked him over to the door and gave him one last hug. “I’m really gonna miss you.” I whispered in his ear.
“I’m gonna miss you too.” he whispered back before pulling away to pick up his stuff. “I’ll call you and stuff.” he smiled.
I smiled back. “Okay.”
He opened the door. “I love you, Bri.”
“I love you too, Alex.”
He walked out the door, to the bus that said “Chasing Starz” in huge black letters and had his face on it. I smiled at it. And even though I knew I was going to miss him like hell, I knew he was making the right choice. I mean, come on. He’s Alex Tomkins for goodness sake.

*Three Weeks Later*

“And now you realized your mistake, and you want me back well that’s great. But I believe you left me, not the other way around…” Alex’s voice boomed through the speakers in Julia’s car.
“That’s my best friend.” I pointed to the subwoofers as I told Q-tip.
“You know Alex from Chasing Starz?” he asked in a bit of awe.
I nodded. “He used to be my drummer.”
“That’s fucking awesome.” he smiled and turned the radio up 10 notches and hung his head out the window like a little kid…or a dog.
“Aright kiddos!” Julz said as we pulled up at the Code 77’s recording studio. “Everyone out!”
-------
“Excuse me…WHAT?!” I yelled in the face of the lead singer from Code77.
“Yeah,” Jared nodded. “That’s normally the reaction we get.” he chuckled. “But really, I think if NeverShoutNever joined the Legacy tour, we could add a whole new genre of music to it. And that’s the whole point of this tour, to basically have people look at the tour line up and be like ‘Whoa, what the fuck? Since when do those bands play together?’.”
We laughed.
Todd, Code 77’s bass player, took over. “Since we’re no longer making music, we thought we could just sponsor a tour. And that’s when we came up with the idea for Legacy tour. To bring bands together, that aren’t normally associated with each other. Basically to open people up to different kinds of music.”
Q-tip nodded. “It sounds pretty freaking rad.”
“So what do you say, Chris? Will NeverShoutNever, and of course your lovely friends from Midnight Bella, be in Legacy tour?”
Chris looked at me and Julz. We both nodded.
“We’re in.” we all said together.
Todd and Jared smiled. “Good. And just wait til’ you see the line up.”
