Chapter Four
"Simon. Simon, honey. Damn it, wake up!" Mum was shaking me.
"C'mon. There's something you need to see." I sat up, still groggy.
The television in the den was blaring a news report. "Police say the young man had a high level of THC. After nearly running several people over, he proceeded to his home, where his mother says he fell down the stairs. He'll remain in the hospital until he's well enough to be tried."
Carter's picture flashed across the screen.
"No no no no no no!" I sped into my room and got dressed.
"Simon, wait!"
But I was already out the door, jamming my keys in the ignition.
~
"Baby? That you?" I grabbed Carter's hand. "Oh my God, are you okay??" Carter nodded. "I bruised my ribs, fractured my wrist, and busted my septum. I'll be fine."
I gaped.
"Carter, you were higher than a motherfucker and you hurt yourself!"
"Excuse me. Are you Simon May?" I turned. A man in a suit and tie was standingin the doorway. I nodded slowly. He extended a hand.
"I'm James Baker. I'm the Jackson's lawyer. A woman broke her leg in a fall she claims Carter caused, and is suing for the damage." He said, addressing Carter. Then, to me he said, "The city is holding Carter responsible for over $200 in damages to town property. His parents said you might be willing to support his case in court?" I looked back at Carter. The realization of what he'd done was setting in. He gave me a pained look.
"Yeah. I guess I can do that."
~
"Jesus, Simon, court? Why would you agree to that?" Mum was yelling.
"Because I love him! You don't seem to understand that! I'm not with him for sex! I am in love with Carter Jackson, whether you comprehend thay or not."
Mum was silent for a moment. She took several deep breaths.
"I loved your dad, y'know. Look where that got me."
~
Jessie's face bloomed on the Skype screen. "Hey there!" she said, mimicking my accent. I gave a weak smile. "What's wrong?" she asked. I sighed. "Carter's in the hospital, my mum's convinced he's going to break my heart, and I've got to defend him in court when he's well."
I explained everything to her, making hardly any sense through my rambling. She shook her head, sighing.
"Well, I don't know what to tell you about court.. But about Carter, your mom may be right, she may not. if he doesn't, lucky you! You go to California and get married! If he does, you move to Cali anyway and meet someone else! Carter Jackson isn't the only man you can love, Sy. If something happens, it will be hard to move on and forget. But it'll be okay. I promise," she said, giving an easy smile.
"Trust me. I have experience in heartbreak. Now don't you dare sigh and say you're going to bed. And yes, I can, in fact, read minds."
I laughed.
"Sometimes I wonder who I'd've become if I'd never left England... If I'd never met you, or Carter, or anyone here.. I'd probably be an epic douchebag with an ego and a small dick," I said.
And so we talked. About exes- her multitude, my few- about music, things that made us cry and laugh and fume. And for that moment, things seemed normal again. We fell asleep together, not even bothering to end the call.
