Down in this cellar were beakers and vials on tables and bodies strapped to tables... It was a make-shift laboratory... By the looks of it, they were no where near successful in thier attempts at finding a cure... At least someone was trying. Walking forward, the others followed close behind me. Going through the paper work, I tried to make sense of it all... Tried to see where their research on the disease started, and the search for a cure began.. I knew that Cam was brilliant at science-y stuff, so I showed the papers to her, hoping that she could make a little bit of sense of it.
Ryan and Avery looked closely at the bodies strapped to the tables, poking and prodding at them to see if they'll be getting back up. They didn't look like they would, but Cam went through and stabbed them in the heads anyway, just in case. With this laboratory being down here, I started to wonder... was this place worth staying in for a little while...? Maybe we could be the answer to it all... or, at least, find an answer to it all. Should we protect this place? Or should we take the research and get out? Pack all the food that we could and go...?
After taking the bodies of the dead to the far end of the yard and burning them, we headed to the car. We needed to fortify this place. After taking a vote, everyone decided to make this our new safe-house. I didn't really mind it, but I didn't see the point in putting in all the effort if we were just going to leave when the food dried up. But, until we could find a way around the giant fallen tree, we didn't really have much of a choice but to stay. Deciding to make a run to the hardware store, Avery decided that he wanted to drive, remembering that he saw one a little way back.
He remembered that there were a few trucks that we could take to bring the heavy supplies back with, because his little hybrid wasn't going to be able to carry much back with him other than the tools and screws. We'd all be taking separate cars back, which was a little horrifying, but if we had Avery follow behind us, we should be alright.
"I spy something silver." Avery said while driving.
"If you say 'a silver lining', I'm going to kick you in the taint." Cam said, tired of the car games.
"I wasn't! Geez, cranky pants."
"Silver Ford F150." Ryan said softly, rather enjoying the car game.
"No, but you're close."
"The zombie-packed ford escort sport zx2 we just passed?" I guessed.
"Bingo!"
It took about twenty minutes to reach the hardware store, and I was having second thoughts. There were so many zoms in the parking lot, I could only imagine how things are going to be inside the store. Looking at Cam, she could see the worry on my face, but she calmed me by placing her hand on my shoulder.
Cam always knew how I was feeling and how to treat it. Sometimes, all it took was a little Cam and Juliet time to fix it. Like before the apocalypse. Whenever I'd feel depressed, or upset, Cam would come over with a case of pepsi, a few movies, and a game controller. She knew me well. I'd be so lost without her. I wouldn't have survived this apocalypse this far without her. She had my back, and I had her's. Snapping out of my reverie of the past, I look to the parking lot ahead of us and take in a deep breath as Avery cuts the engine and turns off the lights. We parked a little way away from the lot so that we could sneak through without having to worry too much about them attacking the car with us trapped inside. Cam placed her hand on my shoulder again and hugged me from the back seat, wishing me luck. It wasn't very comforting, but we knew the risk. Looking to Ryan, he nodded at me, ready to go and get everything we needed and re-group back at the house. Cam and Ryan got out after telling us that we'll meet back at the house, leaving Avery and I alone.
"This isn't that scary...is it?" Avery asked softly, looking ahead. He looked horrified, the color drained from his face.
"No, Avery. It's horrifying." I replied, trying to psych myself up enough to open the door.
