I wasn't allowed to sleep in the car whilst Cameron drove due to the fact that I, probably, had a concussion. Avery tried his best to keep me awake before he, eventually, succumbed to it, himself. When he passed out, Cam kept me awake by talking about life before all of this. Not that it was too long ago, it just seemed like it was. Back when we only ran for our lives in video games, as opposed to in real life. After a few hours, Cam slowed the car to a stop and woke the boys. We were almost out of gas... and we still had a long way to go.
"Juliet, I'm gonna need you to stay in the car. Ryan, Avery, and I can handle this." She turned and looked at me after putting the car in park. I don't think she realized that it was more horrifying to stay in the car than to, actually, be doing something. Staying in the car would cause me to think, and too much time spent thinking was never a good thing.
"It doesn't take a whole lot of gas, so it won't take us long." Avery said, seeing the fear on my face. Jumping and burying my face against Avery's chest as a zombie hit Cam's window and started groaning at her like she was going to be its next meal. Cam rolled her eyes an looked at it before rolling down the window a little and placing her gun in its mouth and pulled the trigger. Rolling the window back up, she smiled at me. "But, after we get some gas in the car, we're going to have to stop for the night to plug it in." Avery said, looking at Cam. She nodded, understanding.
"You know how to fire a gun, right, Juliet?" I glared at Ryan as he mocked me. Grabbing Avery's gun out of his holster, I aimed it at Ryan, causing him to fly backward and hide against the dash. "I was just kidding!" I cracked a smile as I showed him the clip that I'd pulled from the gun before aiming it at him. The gun was empty. I was holding the ammo in my other hand. Reloading the gun, I handed it back to Avery, who was surprised at me.
"I'll stick with my knife. It's quieter." I said and pulled out my switch blade from my pocket. Cameron knew how I felt about guns. The more noise they made, the more zoms showed up. "Don't be gone too long. It's scarier to be the one sitting in the car than it is to be out getting the gas." Avery laughed at me a little. "Shut your face." I warned him. He put his hands up, jokingly surrendering, the cutest smile on his face. "Now go, before I shove you guys out."
"Don't fall asleep, Jules." Avery whispered in my ear after everyone else had stepped out and closed the doors. Just as he opened his door to get out, he kissed my cheek and got out, closing the door behind him. He double checked every door to make sure that they were closed properly and told me to lock the doors if anything got close that wasn't them. I nodded, still in shock that he kissed my face. My face... The hell was that for?
Watching as they all split up after grabbing the gas canisters from the trunk, I sat in the middle of the car with my knife in hand, wrapped in Avery's blanket. I only had to use it once or twice. Otherwise, they were out stalking Cam and the others. Seeing bright flashes light up the night in random spots, I could see the faces of my team for a brief second as they took down the walkers. I worried for their safety... But I knew that I didn't have to. Cam was such a bad ass that she could protect Ryan and Avery with no problem if she wanted. Shifting my eyes about, I watched the walkers that flocked to the flashes and watched them fall for doing so.
It took them about five, to ten, minutes to siphon enough gas to keep us going for a while before they all came back and got in the car. This time, Ryan was driving, and Cam was in the passenger's seat. She must have been exhausted. She needed rest, though. I wish that I could do the same. Avery filled the car with the gas it needed and got back into the car. He smiled when he saw me again, probably feeling like a bad ass zombie killer now that he'd done some killing in the field without me.
"Guns... Easier than spoons, right?" I smiled at him as I sat back in the seat when Ryan started the car and began driving. Avery nodded and looked out the window. He wasn't tired anymore. His adrenaline was probably pumping from killing all of those zombies. I wanted to lay my head on his chest, but I knew that if I did, the heat that was radiating from him would make me tired. So, instead, I leaned my head against the cold glass of the window opposide Avery. Silently, I started singing to myself. "Short Change Hero", by The Heavy, was a song from one of my favorite games and tended to get stuck in my head a lot. I suppose it fit along with the zombie apocalypse, as well as the wasteland of the game 'Borederlands 2'...
