Gone With The Wind

 [Miles’ POV]

“So then I told her, if she’s going to, like, say something like that to my face, she’d better have the guts to back it up! Also, did you know…”

Ugh. If I’m going to listen to Melanie talk for another ten more minutes, I’m going to lose my sanity! Melanie appeared hot and all when I first laid my eyes upon her but we’re only on our first date and I already want her gone. I tried to say a few words but the girl just won’t stop cramping my ears with things I really couldn’t care less about. Who wants to hear if Brandon cheats on two girls? That guy can’t even dribble a ball right. Who wants to know if the head cheerleader is a science geek? I know a lot of geeks and I don’t mind them.

I really need to find a way out. Just as it seemed like there was no hope, my phone vibrated. It was Tyson’s mom. That’s strange. She’s never called me before. What does she want? I pressed the answer button on my phone while my other ear blocked the sound of Melanie’s voice who was still talking and probably didn’t know I was making a call since she was applying makeup onto herself as she spoke.

“Hello? Is this Tyson’s mom?”

“Oh, Miles! Thank heavens! Are you alright?”

I looked at Melanie who was still talking. “Well…kind of. I guess. Is something wrong?”

“Have you seen Tyson and Sylvia? Are they with you?”

“No, miss. In fact, I’ve been busy with basketball practice that I haven’t had the time to meet them at all for the past few weeks.”

“Miles, you must come over! Tyson and Sylvia are missing. My husband and I have been searching for hours but we’ve had no success so far. You’ve got to help us, Miles, you’ve just got to!” she begged.

“Okay, miss. I’ll be on my way.” I said before ending the call. I looked at Melanie who was still talking away.

“Umm…Melanie?” I said to her.

I already couldn’t be bothered with what she had to say. All I heard was blah, blah, blah.

“Melanie?” I spoke again, this time louder.

She was still oblivious and talking about nothing important.

“Ah well. I’ll just be going now…” I got up from seat. I had only taken a step when I heard Melanie’s voice. “Just where do you think you’re going?”

“I have an errand to attend to.” I replied.

“Huh! If your errand is so important, why don’t you just go on a date with it since you think that’s more important than me!” Melanie got up and flipped her hair at me. I rolled my eyes. Whatever. She wasn’t worth my two cents anyway.

I walked to my car and played some Bon Jovi on the music player. Dirty Little Secret played through the speakers as I sang along. As I drove, I thought about how basketball practice had been coming along. Most of the good players had either graduated or transferred schools due to personal reasons. The new guys on the team don’t exactly give me much hope. I’ve seen some of these guys boast about doing blind shots to random girls and yet, during practice, they couldn’t dribble to save their life. They better be practising their shots right now or else I’m going to have give them some ear-bashing again.

My mind switched to the matter at hand. “Where were Tyson and Sylvia?” I asked myself. “I don’t know about Sylvia but I know for sure that Tyson’s not one to try running away from home. What problem has he got anyway? Not any that I know of.”
