Chapter 5: The Jewel box

After that day it was no one stopping us.

We were official. By the second day, everybody in college knew we were going out. But it was really fun to enjoy all the attention or rather I was enjoying it.

Summer was really not happy about it, whenever we passed the corridors together people use to stare and she hated it. All this attention was really new to her. I just took her hand and told her

“It’s fine. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere and whatever, why are you so worried?” I said

She considered my statement for a brief moment and then pouting like a kid nodded her head slowly.

The date is still as clear in my head as anything. It was the day I had promised Summer about our date, but unfortunately I got stuck in football practice and was not able to come. I did not have time to tell her and I knew she would be angry as hell with me!

I had already prepared myself for all the drama, as I walked in her room. Her father had gone out of station and nobody was home. We had decided to watch a nice romantic movie together and then prepare dinner for ourselves.

“Don’t even care to explain, I know your reasons.” She said as I walked in.

“You do?” I asked though I knew I was just fuelling up her anger, but if it was going to be bad then why not have a little fun with this. She gave me a dirty look, a  pretty sexy one to say the truth.

“ETHAN!!” she said her pitch rose. That was my cue to behave.

“Yeah, babe” I said coolly.

All she did is raise her shoulder as if she gave up and she surrendered her hands in the air. But no I was wrong. She walked up to the dresser and sat there, she was just looking from here to there.

And then she did something so extreme that I would not forget. She picked up the Jewel box I had given her on some occasion and threw it on the floor.

There was a terrifying silence between us; all I could hear was the clock ticking. Nor did she spoke and I was too shocked to speak after what had just happened.

I just stared at the broken pieces. And suddenly I hear sobbing sound, it was Summer.

Great, now she was crying for no good reason.

Hmmm…But I had to be the good boyfriend so I walked up to her. She was still covering her face and was crying.

“Summer… I said I’m sorry, I’m really sorry I ditched you on our date.” I said really feeling guilty. I hugged her from the side. She was still sobbing.

“It’s…it’s… not the date, Ethan” she said between the broken sobs.

“Then what?” I said really worried now.

“I was alone, that’s why I asked you to come, to spend time with me. I had asked you to come because dad was out and even Jessica was not free” She said finally looking at me, her eyes were red. I did not know what exactly to say to that. I felt extremely guilty and irresponsible.

“I’m so sorry summer.” I said like a guilty criminal.

The pink box had the broken piece of the Jewel box. The sharp edges cutting through my skin just the way Summers’ out bust had shocked me that day.

She had always been a complacent girl and had never lost her cool so easily but I guess she was really lonely that day.

And now I was lonely forever without her.

God had given me the perfect punishment- by taking her away from me, forever.
