The days went on and on, the same routine over and over again. While the chores and arguments, I kept quiet, adding more details to my plan.
"Lillian,"snapped Zack,"Are you even listening to this?"
I narrowed my eyes at him.
"Leave her be,"warned May,"She's been like this ever since we almost got caught."
I both looked at Zack, then May, finally landing my eyes on Tommy. He could help and I KNOW he'd agree to my idea, I thought. Beginning to smile, Tommy awkwardly smiled back and May eyed me with great concern.
"Whoa, hey. Back off. Tommy is mine,"she stated.
"I don't want him. I need him. Ok, that came out wrong. Not necessarily NEED him, but use him,"I blurted, which was my first words in weeks.
"I missed that sweet voice,"whispered Zack under his breath. Hiding my smile, I pondered at my plan some more.
"Why do you need my boyfriend?"
"Fogetta' about it,"I said, annoyed. May looked insulted but I didn't care. After chores, I sat outside on the wet grass. I needed some space, like we all do. Inhaling the damp air, I stared at the gray sky. What is it like there?, I thought, Is it cold and damp there too? Are the clouds as fluffy as I imagine? Is snow soft rain before it hits the ground? I want to be there. Away from everyone and everything.
Drowning myself in my thoughts, I hadn't noticed Zack until he wiped the rain off my cheek.
"Don't want you to get a cold,"he smiled then sniffled.
I giggled as his cheeks redden, realizing what he just said.
"You're a great person,"I said.
"Really? I don't think so."
"Well, you are."
Silence filled the air for a long moment and I could listen to the rain hit the ground. My hair and my clothes were soaking wet and so were Zack's but we didn't seem to care. He put his arm around me.
"Just trying to keep you warm,"he explained. I moved closer to him, laying my head on his wet shirt. The weird feeling of eyes on me, I turned around to only see May and Tommy staring eagerly at us. They both pretended to be busy but I knew they were watching. I turned my attention back to the sky when suddenly, Zack kissed my cheek.
"Uh..sorry..I.."he stammered, getting up. I touched my cheek and thought, I'm never gonna wash my face ever again.
"It's fine, Zack. It really is, don't worry."
"I'm...uh.."
"Why you freaking out, man?"
"It's that..umm..I think t-that I should get going,"he murmured,"Bye, Lillian."
He hurried to the door and entered the room. I was abandoned on the grass, wet and alone.
