Chapter 19: I'm So Sorry
Carter
"What are you saying?" I ask in a small voice. He looks straight at me as we pull into the driveway. "I love you, Carter."
My heart just stopped. "W-what?"
He reaches for my hands and squeezes them gently. "After you told me to stay away, I felt broken. I needed you. I still you. And I realized that I don't care what Lindy says. If she doesn't like the fact that we're together, then she will have to learn to deal with it because I never want to let you go again."
By now, tears were streaming down my face and I turn away from him? I really hope he's not kidding because I can't bear losing him again.
We stay quiet for a moment before I turn to face him.
"You're being serious this time?" I ask softly.
He nods, grabbing my hands. "I was serious every other time. I just didn't know what to do."
I open my mouth to say something but the front door opens and Aunt Hellen steps outside. She crosses her arms over her forehead, as if waiting for me to come out.
Jonah clears his throat, turning my attention back to him. "I guess I'll talk to you later?" he asks hopefully.
I bite my lip. "I'm not sure," I mutter.
His face falls. "Okay, well, I'll see you."
As I open the door, I hear him say something but couldn't understand. "What?"
"I'm so sorry," he repeats, quietly.
I stay silent for a moment. "We'll talk later," I promise.
*~*~*~*~*
Later actually came a lot sooner than I thought. I went to sleep around six thirty but morning came fast. Next thing I know, I was standing at my locker waiting for Jonah.
Right as I was about to head to class, he starts running towards me. "Wait, I'm so sorry. I overslept because I couldn't sleep at all. And so I had to hurry."
"It's okay," I say, giving him a weary smile. "But the bell already rang and class starts in a few minutes."
He frowns. "Carter, I--"
I cut him off. "We can talk later," I tell him. "But right now, I need to go to class."
He nods, giving me a smile. "Lunch? We can go to the soccer field."
I nod. "Sounds good."
It felt as if classes lasted only five minutes rather than an hour and a half. Soon enough, I was walking out of the lunch room with Jonah right beside me.
*~*~*~*~*
"So, are we good?" Jonah asks.
I laugh. "I think we're good."
He smiles back. "I guess that's a good thing then?"
I nod, leaning in for a hug. He wraps his arms around me and pulls me close. We were only together for a few moments before we hear someone clear their throat.
We pull away and turn to find an angry Joe. "What are you doing?"
Jonah
I honestly didn't expect for Joe to be mad at me. He dumped Carter for Ashley. He has no right to be mad."Hey," I say, suppressing a smile.
He glares at me. "I don't think your sister, or Heather, would appreciate you making out with Carter."
"I broke up with Heather. Unlike you, I don't find reasons to be with who I really want."
His expression hardens and he looks at Carter. "You said we could talk," he says, sounding upset.
She looks down. "I said we could talk. Our definition of talk may be a bit different. And we weren't making out, it was a hug."
Joe stays silent for a few minutes before nodding. "So I guess you guys are now together?"
I shake my head at the same time Carter goes, "Of course not."
"The bell's about to ring," he says. "I'm going inside."
We nod, watching as he walks inside the school.
"Would you date him again?" I ask.
She stays quiet for a while. "I don't know. Probably. He was really sweet before he decided he wanted Ashley instead of me."
"Would you date me again?" I suck in my breath, waiting for the answer.
She looks over at me, a neutral expression on her face. "Just to give it a fair chance."
Before I could say anything, the bell rings. She smiles at me before going inside.
We had agreed to let one of us go first so that it doesn't look suspicious. That way, Lindy won't know anything.
Unfortunately, my next class is with Joe. I guess I'll just sit with Tommy.
I head inside my classroom and take a seat beside Tommy.
He glares at me. "What are you doing?"
My eyes narrow. "What?"
"Just because you're fooling Carter doesn't mean you're fooling me."
Mr. Darkly walks in the classroom. "Alright," he yells. "We have a lot of work to do. So, grab a piece of paper and follow me outside."
"Why is he always screaming?" Tommy mutters.
"I heard that's his whispering voice," I mutter back.
He cracks a smile.
Once the whole class has piece of paper, our teacher leads us outside.
Joe was shooting glares at me.
"What's your problem?" I demand.
He shrugs. "You don't even like her."
I let out a groan. "Why do you guys hate it so much? No, we're not dating. I wanted to talk to her and make sure we were okay. And we are. Just friends for now."
"Shut up," Tommy hisses. "She doesn't like Joe, she doesn't like Jonah, and she's leaving. So shut up and leave her alone."
She's leaving?
