Chapter 4: School Literally Sucks
Carter
Jonah and Lindy pull up my driveway. The first thing I noticed was the tension. Jonah looked very mad. And Lindy looked very upset.I out two and two together and decided it was Liam.
Lindy gets out of the car and gives me a sad smile.
I go up to her and wrap her up in a big hug. "What's the matter?"
Her eyes start to water. "Liam and I broke up."
I can tell from Jonah's face that Lindy doesn't usually cry over boys often. He looks pained. And it hurts to see them both like this.
"Let's go inside," I suggest. "My aunt just made smoothies."
They follow me inside and I lead them to the dining room. Kevin was just starting on his breakfast. He smirks at me. "You got up early, didn't you?"
I throw an apple at him. "Shut up about it."
He rolls his eyes. "I expect to get something out of this."
"Life," I tell him. "You get life."
Lindy takes a seat beside Jonah. I grab two smoothies from the kitchen and hand it over to them.
"So what seems to be the deal? I thought you really liked him."
A tear slips down her cheek. "I did. But he didn't like me back."
I purse my lips to keep myself from pointing out that I had caught him making out with other girls in the hallway this week. I don't think it would help too much.
She looks at me with tearful eyes. "What?"
I give her a confused look.
"You want to say something."
I shoot Jonah an exasperated look before sighing. "Um... it's nothing," I mutter quietly.
She grabs my arm. "Tell me, Carter," she begs. "I need to know."
"I... um, I saw him with a few girls this week," I tell her. "I didn't tell you because I figured you had broken up and that you'd talk to me when you're ready."
A tear falls down her cheek. "What were they doing?"
"Lindy," Jonah says softly. "It doesn't matter anymore."
Lindy nods and stares down at her lap. "Okay," she says, breathing in a shaky breath. "Where's your bathroom?"
I point to a door down the hall and she goes in the direction of the bathroom.
Jonah looks down at the table. "Sorry about that. She is really..."
He trails off.
I give him a small smile. "It's okay."
He chuckles running a hand through his face. "It's just... I get really angry when she's hurt like that. And it sucks. Because I know what it feels like to get hurt and I don't want her to go through that."
I'm not exactly sure what to say right now. So I just nod.
"I used to get in trouble all the time," he says after a while. "For fighting. Usually, it's guys that hurt Lindy. Other times, just for fun. Then my dad got involved and so did the cops..." He sighs. "This is really testing my patience."
