Chapter 11: You Had Me At Hello
Carter
Lindy returns with a purse full of makeup. "You are going to look absolutely hot."I roll my eyes. "I don't want to look hot. I'm not trying to impress anyone." Except for Jonah, but I can't let her know that.
"About that," she says slowly.
"What?" I ask as she starts with the foundation.
"I think Jonah misses you," she says quietly.
If only she knew, I think with a sigh.
"I think he's going to break up with Heather now that you aren't dating anyone."
My heart drops to my stomach. I had forgotten he has a girlfriend. While I'm not going with anyone to the dance, Jonah is escorting his beautiful girlfriend. Not me.
She sighs. "Carter, did you actually like him back or are you like everyone else?"
I roll my eyes. "I had no intention in breaking his heart. He broke mine. And you helped him."
I didn't mean to sound bitter. What I said came out mean. And although she did hurt my feelings, I shouldn't have said that.
Hurt flashes across her face as she pulls away from me. "I thought you forgave me," she says, barely a whisper.
I sigh. "I did. I didn't mean to say that to you. I'm sorry, Lindy."
She looks at me for a while. "You're still mad aren't you?"
I shake my head. "I promise I'm not mad at you, Lindy."
After a few moments, she nods. "Okay. Well, we better finish getting ready."
By the time we were done, Lindy's brother was already waiting outside with Liam and Heather.
Lindy figured that having just the guys would make things awkward so she invited Heather along. The good thing is, Tommy and his girlfriend will be there.
"You look amazing," Jonah whispers as Lindy heads straight to Liam.
I smile. "You look pretty spiffy yourself."
He chuckles. "I'll take that as a compliment."
Heather walks over and loops her arm around his. "What are we talking about?"
I smile at her. "Not much. You look really good."
She relaxes a little and smiles back. "Thank you, you too."
Things were starting to get awkward. I clear my throat and excuse myself. "I think I'm going to talk to Tommy."
She glares at me until I leave. Tommy and Tricia were sitting on the couch talking about something when I got there.
Tommy smiles. "Hey, Carter."
I smile back. "Hey, guys. What are you doing?"
Tricia waves. "Just talking about meeting each other's parents."
I notice Tommy stiffens a little and my brow furrows. "Meet the--"
Tommy motions for me to stop talking and I do. But I can't help being confused. His parents aren't even living with him.
Jonah
Carter looks amazing. If I thought she looked good at the masquerade ball, then I clearly didn't think what she'd look like at a regular school dance.Heather snaps her fingers. "Jonah," she says.
I tear my gaze away from the beautiful woman in front of me. "Yeah?"
"Carter's mom wanted to know if we wanted Pictures. How did you not see her walk in?"
How do I explain this? "I guess I just zoned out."
She rolls her eyes before signaling Mrs. Hellen. "We want pictures."
She smiles kindly before giving me a look. "You better have a good reason for playing her like this," she whispers harshly as I walk past her.
I cringe a little but don't say anything. Carter sits on the couch as we all take pictures with our dates.
I feel kind of bad and wish she was my date, not Heather. I mean, don't get me wrong. Heather's great. But I just don't love her like I thought I did before Carter came along.
Her dress hugs her figure perfectly. It's a light blue dress that goes down just above her knees. It's strapless and has sparkle at the top.
Making her look flawless.
Tommy goes over and nudges at her arm. She smiles and they talk for a while. His girlfriend heads over to them and they start talking too.
I wish I could just butt in. But I know I can't. At least not now.
*~*~*~*~*
I watch as dances to yet another song. I wrap my arms around her waist and hers go around my neck. We stare lovingly into each other's eyes. She presses her head against my chest as we sway to the music.
"I love you, Jonah," she tells me.
I kiss her forehead. "I love you too."
I decided that worrying about Carter to ight won't solve anything. I have to make this the best night for Heather possible. So that when she leaves me - because it's bound to happen - she'll at least remember me by something.
When the music dies down, I notice Carter sitting by herself playing on her phone.
I walk over. "Way to live it up," I say, sitting beside her.
She looks up and chuckles. "I know right. I come to a dance and just sit."
"Why are you just sitting here?"
She shrugs, not meeting my eyes. "I don't know. Lindy ditched me to dance with Liam - no surprise there. And I don't want to bother Tommy."
I nod. "Well, we can dance, if you want."
Something shifts in her eyes. "That's not a good idea," she says, gesturing at Heather, who was glaring in our direction.
I open my mouth to say something but she stops me. "Just go have fun. In about half an hour Aunt Hellen is coming to pick me up anyways."
I give her a small smile before walking over to Heather. Her arms were crossed over her chest. "What are you doing?" she demands.
I shrug. "She was alone. And she's my friend. I wanted to see if she was okay."
She shakes her head but doesn't say anything. "Whatever. Lets go dance."
I follow her to the middle of the dance floor. But I notice Carter watching us and my heart drops.
What am I doing?
