Chapter 43: Zeke's Sacrifice

"E-Eh..?"  Lucy replied, wondering if the poison was getting to her.  "Give you..Star--?"

Zeke nodded, stretching his hand out farther.  "There is only one other thing to do in order to stop this monster, along with Coven."

"W-Wait a minute!"  Lucy exclaimed, pulling herself up to her knees despite Wendy's protests.  "I'll just do it!"

Zeke shook his head firmly, and Natsu and the others looked at him with confusion.  "You can't, Lucy.  The poison has taken to much out of you."

"B-But if I change, the pain'll go away!"  Lucy exclaimed, coughing right after.

Zeke stared at her.  "That cough alone shows you can't do this."

Natsu stepped up.  "Oi; what if she changes?"

Zeke glanced at him.  "When Lucy changes back, she'll die."

Everyone sucked in a breath.

"W-What?"  Natsu murmured, looking over at Lucy as if imagining her gone.

He didn't like it.

Zeke's face was staring at the ground as if he was seeing right through it.  "The transformation doesn't stop the poison.  It just takes the pain away.  Besides..."  He wandered off, his eyes twitching.  "You'd die anyway."

"I'll..."  Lucy rasped,  "..die?"

"What?!"  Natsu exclaimed, not liking his tone.  Getting right up in Zeke's face, he grabbed his collar.  "What do you mean, Zeke?!"

Zeke's eyes were covered in shadow.  "The only other thing we can do to stop this is use a life-sacrificing spell.  In exchange for the soul, Daronyt will be destroyed."  He looked at Lucy.  "As you know, I won't let you die.  Have Wendy heal you while I'm doing this."

Wendy was kneeling behind Lucy, holding her shoulders as Lucy sat up.  "But I can't heal Lucy, remember?"

"You'll be able too once I take away Star Mist."  Zeke murmured as Natsu let him go.

"You're not making any sense..!"  Gray muttered.

Zeke looked at Lucy, sympathy in his eyes.  "The reason you can't heal Lucy is because you only heal body or flesh wounds, Wendy."  His expression hardened.  "The reason you didn't see Coven use his magic is because he wasn't focusing on poisoning the body.  He was focusing on poisoning the soul."

"The..soul?!"  Erza replied, her eyes shaking.

Natsu's breath caught.

"Which,"  Zeke continued, looking back at Lucy who was horrified.  "Is attached to what?"

The realization hit Lucy like a freight train.  "S-Star Mist..!"

Zeke nodded.  "If you give it to me, not only will the poison go away, but I'll use it to be able to end this harshly."

"Hold up."  Natsu mumbled, crossing his arms.  "How are you even going to get Star Mist-whatever?  Can you even take it?"  He narrowed his eyes.  "And how do you know how to do this?"
