Chapter 40: Lucy's Will and Her Answer!

Lucy floated in the never-ending darkness, unconsious as her body flickered in and out of existence.  There was a strange breeze, which blowed her now-free hair and her clothes.  There seemed to be noises far away; they were muffled, and growing softer at some points in time.

Suddenly, Lucy's eyes shook, and she opened her eyes, becoming conscious.

Widening her eyes, she saw she was floating in never ending blackness.

"W-Where am I?"  She called out, frightened.

The last thing I remembered..was..  Lucy thought hard, and then gasped when the memory came flooding back.  ..When I was attacked by Coven!

"Who are you?"

Lucy froze, hearing a voice echo around her.  It didn't sound familiar; it sounded deep and almost..faked.

"W-Whose there!"  Lucy exclaimed, hoping it was help.

"Who are you?"  The voice asked, this time more forcefully.

Lucy flinched.  "I'm...I'm Lucy Heartfilia!  A Fairy Tail wizard!"

"Are you?"  The voice asked, and Lucy widened her eyes in surprise.

She frowned, a little agitated.  "Of course I am!  I belong to Fairy Tail!"

"Strange."  The voice commented, and Lucy spun in a circle in the impending darkness.  "Daronyt has been resurrected, and yet you aren't strong enough to break free."

"D-Daronyt's been awakened?!"  Lucy exclaimed, shock causing her to inhale sharply.  No!  T-Then those visions really will...

"Yes.  Now don't you understand?  You're not strong.  You, Ms. Heartfilia, are a burden."

"A...burden.."  Lucy murmured, her eyes shaking.

"You must face the fact--"

"I already know that!"  Lucy exclaimed, her eyes covered in shadow.

"You do?"

"I've done so much to put the guild into danger."  Her mouth trembled.  "And now that Daronyt's been resurrected...I ended up failing."  She raised her head, and tears were on the corners of her eyes.  "I've let Natsu and the others get hurt, too!  If it hadn't been for me--"  She stopped herself, and suddenly smiled, though it was sad.

"Actually, I've done plenty of things that should make them mistreat me."  Lucy murmured.  "Because of me, the original guild building was destroyed."  Her mind flashed to all the memories as she spoke.  "I was responsible for Natsu getting injured on Tenrou Island...For the guild being in danger and almost killed!"  She covered her eyes, leaning over and curling herself into ball, though she was still facing upright.  "And now..I've not only got them in danger now, but Fiore, too!"

Lucy sobbed quietly in the darkness by herself, realizing just how at blame she felt.

"Tell me,"  The voice started again after a few minutes of silence.  "Lucy Heartfilia, why did you join Fairy Tail?"
