Chapter 1

At the beginning, the very beginning, there was a child. He was tall and thin, he had crystal blue eyes and dark hair. His mother and father didn't appreciate him as much as they should have, thus making the child's two brothers, twins, their favourite children. The unfortunate child was always trying his hardest to please his parents, to make them proud of him, but none of it really mattered. They never cared.

So he left, the Once-ler, when he was a bit older, to find a new life. He wanted to be successful and loved by many, he wanted the family he never really had. He needed someone, someone he could count on. Someone that would care for him as well, not like his parents who were only in it for the money, but for real.

The Once-ler, fast asleep on the seat of his cart, which was being hauled along by his only friend and donkey, Melvin. He awoke to a rough kick under his seat and he opened his eyes, seeing the most beautiful sight he had seen in all his time; a valley full of soft, fluffy, colourful truffula trees and exotic animals.

His lovely blue eyes shot open as he took the whole place in, everything was perfect about this place, the sights, sounds, scents, and the overall feel of the place. It was absolutely gorgeous. One thing was for sure, he had a nice place to call home. "Melvin, this is it. This is perfect, this is the place!" The Once-ler picked his guitar up from behind him and jumped up and out of his wagon to look around.

He strums a few chords, watching the barbaloots and swarmie swans go about there day. Then he noticed the little, orange humming fish humming along with his song down in a stream. It was all so amazing. "Come on, Melvin, we need to set up." He untied the donkey from the cart and began throwing things out onto the ground, shaking his behind in the air.

'Hm? What's this?' Oncie turned around slowly to see a group of creatures staring at him angrily. "H-hey guys, what's... What's goin' on? Heh." A small drop of sweat formed above his brow and he glanced nervously at the animals.

The babarloots, swarmie swans, and humming fish lunged toward him, bouncing off of a few soft pillows of marshmallow packages, which, during the event, were torn open. Squishy, white marshmallow snow fell softly from the sky. Once grinned in victory, whilst setting up his new home.

Soon he was ready to start his search for the things he needed to make the one thing to make him successful and give his the respect he longed for from his parents, he needed the materials to make his thneeds. He reached for his axe, recieving questioning glances from the barbaloots and humming fish, and ignoring them, he swung at a tree. The truffula fell and a light 'poof' and the silky tufts caused it to bounce once it had hit the geound, Once-ler picked it up by the end of it's trunk and dragged it along to his makeshift house where he would collect the soft pinkish tufts to make his scarf-like creation.

The animals who lived in the valley were afraid, they didn't know what he had done, but they weren't the happiest about it. Dark clouds rolled in and lightning streaked the sky, thunder sounded in the distance quickly and all was silent, everything had gone back to normal, all besides a small, furry, orange and yellow creature who stood staring at the dead trunk of the tree in shock. He muttered something and faced the creatures sadly, and began to place rocks around the tree in a circle.

Meanwhile, the Once-ler was pulling the soft threads from the truffula, all so perfect and wonderfully scented, he stuffed it all in a bag and continued on with his work, eventually grabbing hold of the small orange and yellow creature. "Ah-! Who... What are you?" He sat the thing down onto the trunk of the tree and stared at him curiously.

"I am the Lorax, guardian of the forest, I speak for the trees. I am here to tell you that what you are doing is very wrong." His big furry moustache scrunched up under his eyes, giving him a menacing look. "Leave now."

Oncie laughed and poked the 'Lorax', making him grunt and back away. "Yeah? How are you going to stop m-... Wh-who's that..?" The Once-ler pushed the Lorax aside and stared, mouth agape, behind him at a short, slender girl. She had (h/l) (h/c) hair, (e/c) eyes, and she wore (f/c) cargo jeans with a baggy grey shirt. Her gaze startled the Once-ler, forcing him to look away for a moment. "Do you know her..?"

The Lorax smirked, crossing his arms. "Do I know her... Of course, that's (Name), she is here to speak for the trees as well, but is also here to make sure that the animals don't harm you. Like a body guard."

"A body guard.......?" Once stared at the Lorax. This had to be a joke, right? A girl sent to be HIS guard? "Tch, yeah right." Once-ler sighed, slowly looking back up to where the girl was, but she was gone. He looked from side to side, unable to find her. Disappointed, Once sat on the Truffula trunk, surprised to see the girl sitting next to him. He gasped in surprise, raising his hands in an amateur karate position.

"Hm..? Hn..." She looked away from him, obviously not wanting to speak with Once. She didn't seem to be the happiest person on Earth at the moment, that was sad. Once-ler patted her arm and smiled. "Who are you? Mustache intoduced me already."

"Once-ler. Call me Once, Oncie, Once-ler, anything really. I don't mind nicknames."

"Beanpole."

"What?"

"You're tall, Beanpole."

He scratched his chin and averted his gaze over to the Lorax who was chuckling to himself, mumbling 'Beanpole' over and over. "Uh.. Ok, sure. Why not? You're shor-"

Once was cut off by (Name) smacking him in the side of the head. "No. Don't even say it. I don't want to hear a word about my height, got it?" She glared at the tall man, now half laying on the ground in shock, and gave a contented 'hmpf'. So she didn't want to be called short, right, got it.

Oncie pulled himself into a more comfortable sitting position and crossed his legs, placing his hands in his lap. "Is it ok if I call you.... Eh.. (You're nickname)? Does that sound nice to you? Pleasedon'thitme-" He braced himself, ready for the girl to smack him in the head again, but that time didn't come. She stared off into space before nodding 'yes'. Once-ler, grinning, also nodded. He had come up with a suitable nickname for his pretty new bodyguard.

Her voice was hushed. "I like that name... Thanks, and sorry... For hitting you, I mean. I... Have issues with my temper." (Name) chuckled nervously, almost like she was trying to lighten the mood a little. Her cute litte laugh did the trick, and made Once smile like an idiot.

His life was surely about to change, he had a guard, a home, friends, and he sort of had a family for once. He decided he was going to like living here, even with the slightly annoying one with the moustache.
