“Psst!” thok. “Koishii!” thok. “Wake up!” thok.
Megumi forced her eyes open as the sound of pebbles colliding hard against her windows invaded her sleep.
“Koishii!” thok. “Come on, koishii, I know you’re awake now!” thok.
Sano? Megumi’s eyes widened in horror. What is my rooster doing here at this time of the night? She immediately threw her blankets off of her and rushed to the window. She slid it open and looked down.
There he was, grinning broadly up at her as ever in his white jacket and hakama.
“What are you doing here? Someone might see you!” she whispered angrily at him.
“Now, now, Koishii,” he said in an undertone, “I just wanted to show you something. Well, if you’re not happy to see me then I guess I should just be off . . .” Sano theatrically slumped his shoulders and pouted out his lips in mock hurt. Then he turned around and started to walk away when Megumi angrily flipped her hair and said, “Oh, Sanosuke! You really make it hard for me to get mad at you! You’re such an idiot!”
Sano turned real slow towards her and smiled his stupid rakish smile at his lover, “But you love me, nonetheless.”
Megumi raised her brow at him and crossed her arms on her chest, “You really think so, huh?”
“Of course,” he puffed out his chest confidently.
“Why are you here?” Megumi hissed at him.
“I told you. I wanted to show you something. Come with me, please?”
“But, Sano—”
“Come on, koishii. Jump off through the window,” he spread his arms in front of him as if to catch Megumi if she jumped off. Megumi stared open mouthed at the ground: extremely rocky and cold.
“WHAT? ARE YOU CRAZY, SANO?”
“Well, yeah. Crazy over you,” he chuckled, “Come on, koishii,” he nodded, egging her on.
“Sano . . . I . . . I might fall and it’d hurt,” Megumi looked shamefacedly at Sanosuke.
“I’ll catch you, koishii.”
“But—”
“Don’t you trust me?”
Of course, I trust you, Sano! Megumi thought wryly.
“Come on, koishii. I won’t let you get hurt. It would wound me up to see you hurt.”
Megumi smiled down at him, nodded and then climbed up on to her windowsill. She sat on it and then breathed deeply.
“Ready?”
Megumi nodded again. Sano stiffened the muscles of his arms and said, “Jump, koishii.”
Megumi closed her eyes and threw herself off of the window. She scrunched her face and readied herself for the impact. But Sanosuke caught her and she fell safely into his arms.
“Gotcha,” Sanosuke whispered on her ear, brushing his lips against hers, “open your eyes, koishii. It’s fine, I’ve got you.”
