My friends and I had a Christmas tradition. It was kind of lame and kind of childish, but it was tradition and we didn't dare to break it. Each year, for the past twelve years or so, my two best friends and I made a wish on December 12th in the hopes that it would come true on or around Christmas.
Our twelve year tradition began when we were just six years old. Haley, Madison, and I met in the first grade and became best friends immediately. When Christmas came, Madi told us that in her family they make Christmas wishes, which we later found out was just a Christmas wish list, and that gave me the idea to start making actual wishes. So ever since then we continued to make our Christmas wish and just because we were now eighteen did not mean that would would stop.
We had met up at Haley's house late on December 11th to wait for midnight on the 12th, we believed that it would help the wish to come true by making it at exactly twelve o'clock on the twelfth day of the twelfth month. This year it just happened to be 2012, the twelfth year. Of the 2000's anyway.
I wouldn't admit it but I was hoping that the added twelve in the year and twelfth year of tradition would give me a little extra luck because so far none of my wishes had come true. Of course my previous wishes had all been kind of out there from wanting a pet elephant to being a real life Disney princess. And this year would be no different. It is a wish after all, why ask for something ordinary?
So there we were sitting on the floor of Haley's room, counting down the last few minutes of December 11th. "What are you going to wish for?" Madi gave a twisted grin.
"Shut up, you know it won't come true if we tell." I rolled my eyes.
"I have a good feeling about this year." Haley states firmly, nodding her head as if to confirm her belief.
The banter continued back and forth for a few minutes and I glanced at the clock. A shriek escaped my lips. "Midnight! Wish, wish, wish!"
I squeezed my eyes shut. I could see his face in my minds eye. All I want for Christmas is to meet Michael Clifford. I opened my eyes only to close them tightly once more. Please, I added. I opened my eyes in time to watch the clock change from 12:00 to 12:01 and I smiled in satisfaction.
"Now we wait." I murmured, glancing between Haley and Madison.
"Now we wait." They echoed, grinning from ear to ear.
