Jessica was sitting at one of the tables in the back of Palm Echo Bistro. The Diner she worked at during the day. She had about twenty minutes before her shift started. So she decided to enjoy a cup of coffee while she waited.

She was wrecking her brain trying to figure out how she would get another job and still be home to take care of Jamie, Jasmine, and Jahmin. She was 28 with three children whom she loved very much. She would do anything for her children.

She was brought out of her thinking state by her manager Arabelle. Who was now standing in front of her snapping her fingers.

Jessica quickly snapped out of her own thoughts mumbling loud enough for Arabelle to hear her. "Yes?" She asked with a perfectly arched eyebrow.

"I've been trying to get your attention for five minutes. fille stupide toujours perdu dans vos pensées. (stupid girl always lost in your thoughts)" She said something in French that Jessica didn't understand, so she shrugged it off.

"Sorry I was trying to figure some things out but I'm here now. Do you need anything?" Jessica asked picking up the cup of coffee as she stood.

"oui-yes, yes I do." She said while taking the cup from Jessica pushing her towards the kitchen with her free hand. " I need you to start early. We need all the help we can get." She said her accent was thick. You could tell she was French just by the way she spoke.

"No problem." Jessica told her while smoothing the wrinkles out of her apron. She grabbed a pad to take orders with and stuck a pen behind her ear.

It was lunch time so more people would now start to flow in.

••••••••

It was about 3:30 when they sat someone down at a table Jessica had just finished wiping down. She groaned walking back towards the direction she had just come from. Just as she was nearing the table her shoelace got caught in between a chair leg and the floor causing her to begin tumbling over.

She braced herself for the fall. Hitting the floor with a loud thud she looked around to make sure no one saw. Once she knew she was in the clear she dusted herself off beginning her walk again only to be laughed at by the man sitting at the table she was walking to.

She couldn't believe out of everyone who saw her fall it had to be this handsome, arrogant looking son of a gun.

She pulled herself together and gave him a tight lipped smile as she neared the table.

"Hello, Welcome to Palm Echo Bistro. I am Jessica and I will be serving you today. Can I start you off with a drink?" She managed with out tripping over her words. She had been doing this for a few months now so maybe she was getting better.

He scoffed at her as if she was a child who needed to scolded.

She ignored him and waited for him to give her his drink order so she could go make it. "I'll have a Sunkist Basil. And I know what I would like to order already." He said placing his menu down in front of him.

Jessica had already taken the the note pad and pen out. She scribbled his drink and awaited his order. "I would like the French onion soup and mussels a la mariniere, hold the green onions and the tomatoes I could also do without." He said pushing the menu towards her.

Finally she looked up to tell him "I'll be right back with your order."

When their eyes met her breathe hitched and all he could do was blink. Butterflies erupted in her stomach and as much as she wanted to she couldn't move. It was like she was glued to that spot.

He cleared his throat breaking the awkward staring contest. She started to step back and forth between both feet trying to contain her embarrassment as the blush crept up her cheeks.

"Is that all?" She asked as she felt the lump in her throat start to rise. He nodded in reply as she scurried back to the kitchen in fear that he would hear her heart racing.

She had to take a minute before starting his drink. She needed to just breathe and everything would be fine.

After giving the chef his order she walked back to the table with his drink in hand. She was doing a good job of not dropping anything or falling.

Again.

He was looking down typing away on his phone when She stood across from him. He finally looked up as she was growing impatient.

Immediately she put her hand out to hand him the glass when he reached for it and their fingers touched. It sent chills up her arm and down her back causing her to drop the glass.

"Dammit. You incompetent woman." He spat out at her as the cool liquid fell onto his pants.

Was that a good first chapter? Let me know because I'm new to this and if it's not give me suggestions. I'm kind of a little- maybe a lot nervous about how this will turn out. So vote comment whatever. Just talk to me.
