The rest of the day passed by much like the beginning did. I was so excited after lunch when Reece offered to drive me over to her dance studio so I could sign up, that I immediately texted my dad to let him know where I would be after school. For the rest of the day I couldn't sit still, thoughts of dancing running through my mind. I hadn't danced since the night before I moved and, even though that was only two days ago, I was dying to get out on the floor.
Finally, sitting next to Reece in our last period of the day, I waited impatiently with my bags already slung over my shoulder for the last bell to ring. When it did, I all but jumped out of my seat and ran out the door, dragging a giggling Reece with me. "Anna!" Reece called out to me, amused. I stopped quickly, turning around to face my bubbling friend. "Yes?" I asked innocently. She giggled again before saying, "Slow down, you're acting as if your mom is giving birth or something." I was taken aback from the mom comment.
Reece seemed to notice my sudden lack of enthusiasm and conversation as I walked sullenly by her side. "Hey, what's wrong? Is your mom dead?" I shook out of my faze and glared at her, then mentally slapped myself for being so rude. Reece didn't know about my mom, so I had no right to be mean to her for trying to find out what's wrong. "Um no she isn't dead. She left my dad and I a year ago for some college guy. I don't like to talk about her much." I told Reece the semi truth, avoiding the whole 'my mom abused me' crap for now. I'd only known Reece for a day, I liked her but we were not close enough for me to share that kind of information with her.
"Oh gosh, I'm sorry Anna. I didn't mean to upset you." She apologized quickly, making me laugh. "Don't worry about it" I told her honestly, "I don't wear the 'My mom left Me' t-shirt much anymore." She laughed at that, linking arms with me and pulling me to the parking lot where her old ford convertible was parked. "Nice car" I commented as I climbed in the passenger seat.
"Thanks, it was my grandma's, but now she lives in a home so she doesn't drive anywhere. She gave it to me" Reece said admiringly, petting her steering wheel. "I'm guessing you're a car person?" I laughed. "Yeah I love this car" Reece giggled back. We took off out of the school parking lot and down some unfamiliar roads in comfortable silence. The ride was only about fifteen minutes before we pulled into another parking lot.
The studio was called 'Danni's Dance Academy' and the building was absolutely huge. At least five times bigger than Mrs. Elliot's dance studio back in Minnesota. "Oh my gosh!" I squealed loudly, bouncing in my seat, "It's huge! Way bigger than the studio back in Minnesota" I told Reece excitedly. She laughed at me, getting out of her car. "Well don't just sit there," She called out to me, "Come sign up, I thought you wanted to dance!" I quickly climbed out of her car, grabbing my bag and ran after Reece, who was already at the door.
After I caught up to her, Reece just stood their, building up the suspense. Finally I lightly slapped her shoulder and said, "Open the door already!" She laughed and then threw open the door, walking through. I followed her, and then stopped dead in my footsteps.
