My name is Shade; sounds like a boys name, right? But I'm a girl and thanks to my parents' work, I'm an orphan. That probably sounds really cliché, but others really don't know what it feels like to have everything you've ever wanted then wake up the next morning in a strange bed, in a strange place, without any memories of what happened. Imagine that happening to a 3-year-old. Probably fucking up that kids mind, right? It bothers me that so many people write stories about all that, but none of them actually knows how it feels. I'm 16 now, only a few more years till I'm 20 and I can get out of this hell hole.

"Wake up! We got some families comin' and y'all gotta look presentable!" The head lady yelled at all of us. She walked out of the room slamming the door behind her as the girls, who slept on the right side of the room, got out of bed to get changed in 'cute' dresses. The boys, who slept on the left side, covered their eyes and waited before getting changed in whatever dressy clothes they had. I got changed last since I was the oldest. I changed into a pair of black skinny jeans and a Jack Skellington shirt. Even though the shirt was small, it still didn't fit me right since I barely eat anything in this god forsaken place. I brushed out by greasy black hair and put on my black eyeliner before following the other kids to the adoption room.
"Now children, line up, please!" The head lady said in her fake sweet voice with a fake Australian accent. She shot me a glare before talking to the first couple who were dressed very old fashioned. They went up to a girl who I've become friends with. The girl was five years old and had a very old pink dress with pink pigtails.
"My names Abigail," she almost whispered then started coughing into her elbow causing the adults face to twist into concern.
"How would you like to live with us, sweet Abigail?" The couple asked and Abigail nodded quickly. They each took one of Abigail's hands and walked out of the room. I smiled to myself, glad that my little friend is going to a good home.

It seemed like hours till the last family came and adopted the last kid leaving me there by myself.
"Clean up the house, girl. Make yourself useful for once!" The head lady snarled at me and gave me one last look of disgust before stalking off to her office. I flipped her off before making my way to the closet to get the bucket and mop. Damn people tracked mud all over the place; more work for me to do. I filled the bucket before scrubbing the floors in all rooms plus the bathroom and I remade all the beds before cooking the best meal I could make for the head lady. I did the dishes then crawled into bed. What a boring day, I thought before falling asleep.
