Chapter 1
I looked in the mirror, remembering the first met him. Looking back on it now, I really shouldn’t have let him go.
It was halfway through the first semester. I was sitting in chemistry trying desperately to understand what my teacher, Mr. Hargraves, a plump, but funny man, was trying to teach. It was safe to say that chemistry wasn’t my favorite subject. When class started, I sat where I usually did, I sat alone, I liked it better that way. I began taking notes when the door to the classroom opened. Yes, that was strange, but I didn’t really think anything of it, that is until Mr. Hargraves uttered the words, “Class listen up. We have a new student, his name is Henry.” I looked up and saw what had to be the most gorgeous guy on the planet, standing not even fifteen feet away to me. When I looked up, our eyes connected, I looked away quickly, trying to hide my obvious blush. Then, I heard a chair being pushed away from the desk, and then I felt his presence.
“Hi, I’m Henry Lau.” His voice was smooth and calming, only to be complimented by the cute smile he had on his face. I guess I stared to long because he cleared his throat. “Do you have a name?” He had an amused tone in his voice, but there was something more than that. It sounded to me like he was somewhat … nervous?
“Sorry.” I could feel a blush coming on again. “I’m Kelsey Lee”
“Oh wow, that’s a pretty name. By the way, your Asian right?”
“Yeah. I’m mixed. My dad is Korean, my mom is American.”
“Oh, I’m Chinese, but I grew up in Canada. I’m fluent in Chinese though.” It was weird. We were just having a simple conversation, but it somehow felt.. right?
Before I could respond, Mr. Hargraves quieted the class down. “Well, since this first semester has been pretty easy, I’m going to give you “hardworking” students a lab. Partner up while I pass out the direction sheet. Henry turned to me and said
“Do you want to be partners?” I wanted to say yes, but before I could, Kim, Ms. High Class walked up to him and said,
“Hey, it’s Henry right? I’m Kim. Why would you wanna be partners with her, when you could much rather be my partner?” Ugh. Well, there she goes again. If there is one thing everyone knows about Kim, it’s that she goes after every guy. Basically, if you’re a member of the male population, you have probably been hit on by Kim.
“Um, well thanks for the offer Kim, but I kind of wanna be with Kelsy... so maybe next time?” I would be lying if I said that didn’t shock me. No one and I do mean no one, turned down Kim. The best part of it was her reaction, if I was shocked she was downright stupefied.
“So, what do you say Kelsy? Wanna be my partner?”
“Sure,” I said, “Why not?” That earned me a smile from Henry, and what I considered a death glare. I would obviously be her next target, but for some reason, I honestly didn’t care.
That day, I learned more about Henry, than I ever thought possible. He had a passion for music; he wanted to be a performer someday. He told me that his cousin, Zhoumi, was in a Chinese sub-unit of a Kpop group, called Super Junior. He claimed to be shy, but from the earlier events of that day, I didn’t really think so. But then again, I am usually a shy person, but with him I felt comfortable. It wasn’t something I was able to explain. He talked a lot, and he was funny, he never really ran out of things to say. Henry was different from other guys, I could tell that much. He had an air about him that just made you instantly like him.
“So, um, I’m kinda new around here. Would you mind showing me around town this weekend?” Trying to be funny I said,
“My, my Henry. Are you asking me out on a date?” I laughed, think that he would laugh too, but when I looked at him, he was blushing. Oh my gosh, did I actually make him blush. Haha, maybe I do have some game. He was still blushing when I looked at him again so I told him, “Haha, I’m just kidding.” That earned me another smile from him. Oh yeah, something else I learned about Henry, he smiled a lot. When we were finished with our lab, Henry asked for my number, and told me he would call me later that week so we could meet up somewhere before I showed him around. Chemistry was my last class of the day, so after I went to my locker and grabbed my homework, I made my way home.
When Friday finally came around Henry didn’t show up for chemistry, and he still hadn’t called me. Okay, yeah, maybe I was a little forward, but he didn’t have to start skipping class, and he was the one who asked for my number. I began asking myself why I was letting this upset me so much and the answer was pretty clear to me, I liked him. I liked him a lot. I decided maybe it was best to just get over him, I mean I didn’t really know him that well. When I got home it was around 3:00 and I still hadn’t heard from Henry. I decided to watch some TV, but instead, I just fell asleep on the couch.
By the time I woke up, it was around 7:30, and I checked my phone. I had three missed calls, all of which were from Henry. The last time he called me was a couple hours ago, so I decided to call him back. The phone rang, and by the third ring I was getting worried he wasn’t going to answer. On the fourth ring, the phone picked up.
“Hello?” He sounded like he was sleeping.
“Hey Henry, it’s me Kelsy. You sound like you’re really tired, so do you want me to call you back later? Sorry, I didn’t answer by the way, I fell asleep.” Ugh… why did I tell him that? Like yeah sorry Henry I was sleeping. Why couldn’t I have come up with something that made me sound like I was actually an interesting person?
“No! No! It’s okay. I’m not busy. Haha don’t worry about it. I just wanted to know if you could still show me around tomorrow.”
“Yeah, sure,” I replied, “Where do you want to meet?”
“Okay, cool. Um… how about we meet at the Starbucks on Jonathon St, at around 1:30.”
“Yeah, that’s fine I’ll see you then.”
“Okay then. Bye Kelsy!”
“Bye Henry.” And then he hung up.
So, tomorrow I was going to hang out with Henry. Well, I just hoped I wouldn’t make a fool of myself.
