The Accident

I laughed as I listened to my mother ranting about being safe while driving. She was always paranoid about driving since my dad died. It was so unexpected for all of us.

I hugged her tighter than usual just by instinct. I then moved on to my sister Florence who happened to be 9 months pregnant. She came to stay with mom till she's going to conceive.

Her husband, Robert didn't have time to take care of her, not that he didn't want to. I also hugged my 17 year old brother who grimaced at that action.

Flo was the eldest of us all at 26, and I am 23. Jake was just a little surprise for us. Unfortunately he didn't get to see dad for he met with an accident not much later than his birth.

Mom refused to move on but I did. Flo got married last year after being in a relationship with Rob for more than 6 years. They were high school sweethearts. I moved from California to New York to support my business.

I'm an interior decorator. I always loved it and being controlling, I looked to do things my way. And the fame that came with the business was a plus. I became a billionaire almost overnight so the money that I get from the business, I help people.

I give away huge charities, donations and I have 10 shelters size of mansions, personally designed by myself, around the whole world. It was just like taking a spoon of water from the sea. The money was replaced months later by the business.

I walked around my car and sat in. Jake came to the passenger seat and I rolled down the window.

"Don't go sis," he said sullenly.

"I have to Jake. Don't worry, I'm going to be back for Christmas, aren't I?"

"Please Jen, I have a really bad feeling about this. Go back tomorrow, or later at night if it's important but not now."

"Don't be silly boy," I laughed while ruffling his hair while he swatted my hand away. "Nothing's gonna go wrong. I would take you with me but you have to take care of mom and Flo," I sighed.

Mom was diagnosed with cancer five years ago and she remains weak. That's why I visit her every now and then as doctors were saying she didn't have much time left. At first I was sceptic about Flo moving in but Ella, our maid and nanny, said she'd take care of both of them.

I kissed his forehead and started the car while driving away from the porch. I had a long journey ahead so I stopped by Walmart and bought a few snacks. I wonder what Jonathan must be doing. Jon was my 4 years old boyfriend and seriously, I've been waiting for him to propose since the last two years.

Almost instantly as I'd been thinking about him, my phone rung, displaying his name on the screen. I laughed while picking it and answering.

"Hey babe." I said.

"Uhm, is this 'My love'?" A woman asked and I had never been more confused.

As reality dawned upon me, I realized that he saved my name under 'My love'.

"Yes," I answered, anxiety kicking in.

"My dear, this is nurse Pamela speaking from Newton hospital."

I almost cried when she mentioned hospital.

"I'm sorry dear, but I have bad news to tell you. Your boyfriend has been victim of a car accident and he was badly bruised."

"What?" I yelled.

"I'm sorry dear, we're losing him. He kept saying some Jen's name."

"That's me." I was crying so hard. I then heard a voice in the background.

'Doctor, doctor. We're losing him. His brain is already dead but his heart is steady. Shit, bring the scalpel quickly. We need to perform the operation now!' I heard more yelling in the background before hearing the 3 words causing me to break down.

'We've lost him.'

As I broke the top of one small hill, I saw a dead deer. Without any thoughts and purely by instinct, I pulled the car to the left and back to the right. No big deal, but I was going fast, way too fast. Also, I was not in a good state of mind.

The car swerved back to the left, to the right and to the left in a zigzag motion. Each time I could feel the car scratching the road with its sides. My body jolted with the sporadic movements of the car. The car swerved to the right for the last time. With my eyes sealed shut, I could feel my body float off the seat of the car.

I opened my eyes to see the black road in the distance. I felt the cold ground on the side of my body. I couldn't move and barely knew what had happened for it took place quickly.

I laid there until my mind comprehended why had happened. I wedged between the head of my car and the dirt. The car rustled and its each movement pierced my body. I heard an uneasy voice screaming in the distance.

The sound was fading away from my ears. The car jiggled and I could feel the car lifting from me. For the first time, instant pain struck my lower body. The pain was excruciating. I couldn't bear it.

My breaths became shallower and my head was exploding with all the movement that took place. I took a deep breathe in but ended up coughing a sticky liquid. The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth and I felt myself slipping away.

'Stay with us. She is not breathing.'

That's when I slipped into oblivion with not even a tiny ounce of pain.

Soon, I was energized once again. I lifted myself up and inspected my hands and injuries but there were none. I was in a completely different attire from what I wore. I heard crying and yelling and saw mom in the distance.

"Mom," I yelled. "Mom I'm here." I screamed.

I walked towards her but she didn't even acknowledge me. She was looking at someone wrapped in white sheets. Who might that be? Heaven! Was that Jon?

But when they lifted the sheet, my breath hitched in my throat. It was me! I looked bruised and battered but.. When realization dawned upon me I screamed with all my mind.

I couldn't die, I couldn't! I saw Flo heaving in pain at a corner. Shit, she was having contractions. Rob held her and moved towards the car. Hot tears streamed down my face.

That's when I realized, my whole body was of a sickening pale colour, almost white. My clothes, I wore my favorite dress which fitted like a second skin to me with my 8 inches heels.

I saw a man looking at me. He was handsome, too handsome for a human. He was just like a Greek God. How could he see me? Shit, he was coming towards me.

"Jenifer?" He spoke, his voice husky and deep.

"Y-yes." I choked.

"Your time has come. I have to take you o the underworld."

"Nooo, I cannot die. Who are you?" I screamed. No one seemed to notice this Greek God -like man standing in front of me.

"I'm Thanatos, the lord of death." He said and I paled, if that was even possible.

He held my hand forcibly and I started to glow a bright color.
