My hands shook as I waited for Jason to say or do something. We'd been sitting on the dirt for the last ten minutes, our knees touching as we starred at each other. I wasn't too sure what I was worried about, but knowing that I was about to learn some things about my powers I automatically began to shake. I hated my powers, I hated them so much. I didn't know what was wrong with me, what caused these stupid abilities to control fire and I really wasn't sure if I wanted to know why I was able to shoot fire from my hands.
After telling Jason what I knew about my powers, which was literally nothing aside from knowing I could shoot fire from my hands, he had taken a seat on the ground and gestured for me to sit across from him. And so we sat, starring at each other as the day began to fade away. I tried to hide my shaking by making my hands into tight fist, but I could tell Jason had already noticed them. He kept making small glances down at my palms, as if he was waiting for me stop shaking before he began.
"You're special, you know that, right?" I was kind of shocked my Jason's sudden comment. I had been expecting him to say something more along the lines of, 'You're a freak, you know that, right?' But if I were a freak, what would that make him exactly, considering he could control water AND wind. I mean, he had two abilities, where as I only had one.
I didn't say anything. "Do you know what the four elements are?" Jason asked.
I blinked, that was a stupid question. "Of course; earth, wind, fire, and water." I said.
Jason nodded, "Yes, and you do realize you control fire, right?" He asked.
"You mean I can spit fire from my palms? Yes, I know that."
Jason grinned, "No, I mean you can control fire. It's a very strong element and you control it."
"I'm not too sure I understand what you mean by 'control it'." I stated. I was pretty sure all I could do was shoot fire out of my palms, and that didn't happen often.
"You can do way more than just spit fire from your palms. You can make it do whatever you want to do. You control it, it's like you have it on a leash and you have all the power over it in the world." He said. I almost laughed at his comparison.
"You can't put fire on a leash." I said.
Jason chuckled, "That wasn't the point. What I'm trying to say is that, if you learn how, you can use your ability for good. You can learn exactly how to control what happens to the fire when you release it."
I was slowly beginning to register what Jason was saying, but it didn't seem possible. Then again, I could throw fire from my hands which shouldn't be possible, yet it was. Why did controlling fire seem so impossible?
"So, you can control wind and water?" I said.
Jason smiled, "Now you're getting it." He took my hands and cupped them together. He then put his palm up, facing the sky. In one blink, water seemed to just appear out of thin air, hovering above his hand. With just a slight twist of his wrist the water flowed down into my palms. I laughed as it chill cooled my hands, but my hands didn't get wet. It was as if he had just laid a cold blanket over my palms.
"How are you doing that?" I asked, amazed.
"It's all about control." He said, twisting his wrist again. The water rushed up, swirling in a circle above our heads.
I laughed as I watched it going in circles, twirling, as if doing a dance above our heads. I could feel Jason's eyes on me as I watched the water. "And sometimes, when you lose concentration," He said, "This happens."
