The Chessplayer

Chapter 1

I'm not going to get into all that stuff like "Look, if you're reading this, put it down and do stuff." I will get straight to what happened (which is nonsense).

I woke up and looked at my alarm clock. It was 7:30. "Shoot! I'm going to be late!"It was Wednesday morning and I had to go to school.I quickly got dressed and rushed downstairs, made breakfast, rushed upstairs and brushed my teeth. I put on my sneakers, grabbed my backpack and rushed out the door. I looked at my watch. 7:53! I had two more minutes to get to the bus stop! I sprinted down to my bus stop and get there just in time because when I looked over my shoulder, there was the bus. I was so glad that I had made it or I would have gotten in BIG trouble.

Usual school day. Nothing much to say. When I had gotten home, I noticed a car in my driveway. I remembered it was grandpa's car. My grandfather is the best! He's not the kind that sits around all day and just talks.Oh no! He is one of those extreme grandparents who does cool stuff with you like go skiing or hiking on mountains.But recently he has been not well. It was surprising to see him in our driveway.I went inside.

"SURPRISE!!!!!"

Out of nowhere, everyone jumped out. At first, surprise,then confusion. I thought hard. Then I remembered what today was. I had forgotten that today was my birthday!I felt stupid!

"You should have seen the look on your face when you walked in! HA HA!"Was what my sister said! My sister one year younger then I am and looks the same as me. Dark brown hair,tall. But the only difference is that her hair is longer and her eyes are blue, mine are green.

"I wasn't that scared"! I countered.

"Yes,you were."said grandpa.He was sitting in a wheelchair.He looked the same as when I last saw him.He had gray hair, plaid t-shirt, and jeans.

"How are you grandpa"?I asked.

"I'll be up and about in a a couple of weeks.But today's not about me,it's about you, and I have something special for you!"He pulled out a box.It was wrapped in wrapping paper with a bow on it.I was curious about what was in the box.

"May I open it?"I asked.

"Of course!It's yours!"

I started ripping off the wrapping paper.When it was all off,I got a proper look. It was a chess board that open up so you can store pieces.I opened it up to look at the pieces. They were made out of wood. They were finely carved. The knights looked like real knights. The rooks looked like castles. You get the idea. It looked cool and I was pretty good at it but chess is kind of boring.

"Thank you" I said so I didn't hurt his feelings.

"I hope you like it.There is more more to it then you think there is."grandpa said mysteriously

I knew grandpa was kidding but what he said sent chills down my back. Something told me that there was truth in what he said.

The rest of the day was great. I got presents and my favorite cake;chocolate with strawberries. Yum!

I had a dream that I was standing at an alter. On it was a glowing red circle. In my hand was a pawn that was in the chess set that I got for my birthday. I approached the alter. I started hearing whispers in my head. I was about to place the pawn on the alter when someone screamed. I woke up.
