The smell of baked bread wafted through the capital common building and the lame hum of what the common believes to be music floats through the air. It was just the same as yesterday. Just as the people walking down the street were the same as yesterday. And the day before that. And the day before that. And, even, the day before that. Everything was exactly the same. Just as it has been since 2053 the last year where there was any trace of beauty or uniqueness.
When 'The Great Death' happened everything was different. Every place in the world was completely obliterated by a huge radioactive flare. The only place which is still inhabitable is The City of Braavo, previously known as the city of Surat in India. There is now a huge wall built around the city which is still being developed further and further, parents tell their children that one day, the wall might be so tall that they could stand on it and reach up and touch the clouds. Beyond the wall there are huge trees which are hundreds of meters thick and kilometers tall. That land, outside the city, is named the Land of the Forgotten. There are monsters that have been created from the radioactivity. There are radioactive monsters that used to be humans, cows, fish and any other living things. There are huge trees, bushes and plants climbing up the outside of the walls and as far as you can see, from anywhere along the wall, there is green. There is only one place where you can see water outside the walls and that is about 20 miles away from the north facing side of the wall. Some nights, if you're lucky, you can creep up the thousands of stairs up to the top of the wall and look down and see fire. You can see fire from all the people who have run away from the city and made life in the forests. Some say their faces are demented, like they've had acid poured over them. Others say they look the same, if not better than when they left.
The humming of the music faded and everybody stopped moving. This did not usually happen, unless something important was needed to be said by the common or if there was an emergency. The monotonous low voice bellowed over the loud speaker a message that was completely impossible to fully understand... For the Rogues. That meant that there was a pack of Rogues or other creatures nearby because otherwise they wouldn't have said the message in code.
"Sir, all I got from the message was... Meet.... Seven o'clock.... Because.... Bring your...." Said a mysterious looking guy with dark, slicked back hair and a suit on.
"Good job Alexander, if anyone else got more information we might be able to understand the message." Said Sir, who was wearing a dark navy dress jacket over a white shirt and jeans.
"I got 'Meet at the... At seven minutes to seven o'clock, no later and no earlier, we will refuse to open... there are... roaming the city... It is unsafe... protect yourselves and bring...' that is all I got Sir" Shouted a man with a small headset and black clothes who was sitting in a tiny pod with a computer.
"Okay, brilliant work! We have almost got the entire message. We have so far deciphered 'Meet at the... somewhere... at 6:53 exactly because otherwise they will refuse to open... something... because there are... I'm guessing Rouges or another 'creature'... roaming the city. It is unsafe... something... protect yourselves and bring your... something...' I think that is awesome progress everyone. All we need to do is work out where they are meeting, why it is unsafe and what they must bring. Has anyone else got any information?" Sir glanced around the room trying to find someone who wanted to share more information when he spotted someone in the corner who looked extremely anxious."June, do you have any information that you are willing to share with us?" Sir challenged, making direct eye contact with the clearly uncomfortable young girl. She had long chocolate brown hair, green eyes and was wearing a set of short, denim overalls over a white short tee shirt, which was just a bit too long to be a crop top but not long enough to be a normal tee shirt, with an unbuttoned plaid shirt as a jacket, black pantyhose and a pair of black Doc Martins. She wasn't a very thin girl like the rest of the younger recruits, she had a couple of extra pounds but she definitely wasn't very big. She was the newest recruit for the Rogues but she still hasn't left her family. She still goes home, rather than staying on campus like most other Rogues and she hasn't told her family that she is becoming a Rogue. She wears a simple facade and still goes by her number rather than her name. She shouldn't be blamed for it though, she is a part of the highest family in the city. Her entire family is a part of the common.
"O-only... Only the... Only the information that... that, uh... that everyone else found..." She croaked, sounding only seconds away from bursting into tears. She was usually quite flamboyant, never is she this shy. She looked awkwardly back at her computer screen and began 'tippity tapping' away on her keyboard. Slowly, she slid further and further into her chair, trying to hide.
"I did not dismiss you! You do not turn away! What are you doing on there?" He shouted at her, although it wasn't a very intimidating shout, more like a raising-his-voice-so-she-can-hear kind of shout. He walked over to her computer pod and looked at the screen. There, right in front of his eyes, was a completely deciphered message. His mouth dropped open with awe.
"Meet at the Orley Common Building at 6:53 exactly because otherwise they will refuse to open the gates any time after that. It is because there are Rogues and Draugr roaming the city. It is unsafe protect yourselves and bring your families and your family sigil amulet for protection" Sir read aloud. He took a step back, completely shocked. Of course she would understand it! She is still a part of the common to them! Sir shouted a gleeful "Finally!" Everyone stood up and jogged into the middle of the room for a big group hug. Everyone except June. She knew she had betrayed her family. While everyone celebrated she walked to the door, well, she tried. "June," Shouted Sir "I need to talk to you! In my office. Hurry up!" She shuffled through the large working area and out into the back room which was Sir's office. There was paper strewn everywhere. She sat down in the large, uncomfortable desk chair and pushed her back into the rough wool. She was trying so hard and what she wanted was to just disappear. She knew she would be in trouble now.
Sir laid his hands onto the metal desk in front of her and leaned forward. "You must report all information you collect to me or there will be serious consequences. I know it is hard to tell that information to us because you must have been thinking you're betraying your family. You are not. You're helping us and to that we are grateful. I am going to let you off with only a warning but I expect that it will not happen again and if it does I am taking action. Also you must soon leave your family, June, it has been too long and we are starting to fear that you are a spy. We are giving you a week before we remove you from The Rogues and take back any information from this. Away with you now, child." He said, before returning his hands to his sides and leaning back into the chair, still looking at her. She sat in her place for a while, thinking about how calm and kind he had been, before she stood up and left the office. June left straight away and walked directly home to pack. She knew that it was time.
